Snout about 3/4 eye diameter; maxilla long, tip pointed, reaching to or a little beyond edge of gill cover; anterior gill rakers mere stumps; hind border of gill cover with a small triangular projection; panamensis-type gill cover canals. Pectoral fin long; anal fin origin below midpoint of dorsal fin base. A silver stripe along flank in small individuals, disappearing with age (Ref. 189).

Feeds on fish and shrimps (Ref. 189). Trawled down to 40 m, but usually in shallower water and entering river mouths, with one record from about 16 km up the Suriname River and apparently common in brackish water and fresh water in the Orinoco delta at Tucupita; also abundant in the fresh water Pedro Miguel Lock, Panama.

A coastal species that apparently forms large schools. Enters brackish and fresh waters. Feeds on small fishes (including clupeoids) and prawns (Ref. 12225). Seems to spawn over an extended period in Costa Rica (small fishes caught in February, September and October). Marketed fresh (Ref. 9298).

Vissen Anchoa spinifer is een straalvinnige vis uit de familie van de ansjovissen (Engraulidae), orde van haringachtigen (Clupeiformes). De vis kan een lengte bereiken van 24 centimeter.
Leefomgeving
De soort komt zowel in zoet, brak als zout water voor in tropische wateren in de Grote en de Atlantische Oceaan op een diepte tot 55 meter.
Relatie tot de mens
Anchoa spinifer is voor de visserij van beperkt commercieel belang. In de hengelsport wordt er weinig op de vis gejaagd.

南美小鯷（学名：Anchoa spinifer）為輻鰭魚綱鲱形目鳀科的其中一種，分布於西大西洋區，從巴拿馬至巴西；東太平洋區，從哥斯大黎加至秘魯海域，棲息深度1-55公尺，本魚體延長，吻長度約3/4眼徑，上頷長，胸鰭長，體側具一條銀色條紋，臀鰭軟條21-25條，體長可達24公分，喜群游，棲息在沿海，會游進河口淡水區域，以小魚、魚卵為食，可作為食用魚。
