Gould's shortwing (Heteroxenicus stellatus) is a small species of passerine bird in the family Muscicapidae. It is found in the Himalayas (mainly Uttarakhand, Sikkim and Bhutan), Yunnan and northern parts of Myanmar and Vietnam. It breeds in the eastern Himalayas in rocky areas above the tree-line and winters at lower altitude in wooded valleys.

Gould's shortwing is the only species in the genus Heteroxenicus. It was formerly placed in the genus Brachypteryx.

The common name commemorates the English ornithologist and bird artist John Gould (1804-1881).^[2]

Taxonomy

The first formal description of Gould's shortwing was by the English ornithologist and bird artist John Gould in 1868 from a specimen collected in Nepal. He chose the binomial name Brachypteryx stellatus.^[3]

Gould's shortwing is the only species in the genus Heteroxenicus. It was formerly placed in the genus Brachypteryx and was assigned to the thrush family Turdidae.^[4] The genus Heteroxenicus had been introduced by Richard Bowdler Sharpe in 1902.^[5] The genus name Heteroxenicus combines the classical Greek words heteros for "different" and xenikos for "stranger". The specific epithet stellata is from the Latin word stellatus meaning "starry" or "set with stars".^[6]

There are two subspecies:^[4]

• H. s. stellatus (Gould, 1868) – central Himalayas to south China and northeast Myanmar
• H. s. fuscus (Delacour & Jabouille, 1930) – northwest Vietnam

Description

Gould's shortwing is 12–13 cm (4.7–5.1 in) in length with a weight of 19–23 g (0.67–0.81 oz). It is chestnut coloured above and dark grey below with small white spots or stars on its belly. It has long brown legs and a black bill. The sexes are similar. Nothing is known about the nest or the eggs.^[7][8]

El alicorto estrellado (Heteroxenicus stellatus)^[2]​ es una especie de ave paseriforme de la familia Muscicapidae nativa de las montañas de la región indomalaya. Es la única especie del género Heteroxenicus.^[3]​

Taxonomía

Anteriormente se clasificaba en el género Brachypteryx, dentro de la familia Turdidae, pero el género fue trasladado a la familia Muscicapidae y los análisis genéticos indicaron que el grupo era polifilético, por lo que se escindió a la mitad de sus miembros incluyéndolos en otros géneros, quedando el alicorto estrellado como el único miembro del género Heteroxenicus, también en Muscicapidae.^[3]​

Distribución geográfica y hábitat

Se encuentra en los bosques de montaña tropicales y subtropicales del Himalaya y el norte del sudeste asiático, distribuidos por el norte de la India, Bután, Nepal, suroeste de China, Birmania, y Vietnam (subespecie H. s. fuscus).

Utseende och läten

Pärlkortvingen är en liten (12–13 cm) och mörk fågel med långa ben och smal stjärt. Den är kastanjebrun ovan och marmorerat skiffergrå undersida med små stjärnliknande fläckar på buk och flanker. Ungfågeln är streckat rödbrun på ovansidan och bröstet. Sången är en serie mycket ljusa och genomträngande som ökar i både tempo och volym.^[4][5]

Utbredning och systematik

Pärlkortvinge delas in i två underarter med följande utbredning:^[6]

• Brachypteryx stellata stellata – förekommer i Himalaya (Nepal till Bhutan, sydöstra Tibet, sydvästra Kina och nordöstra Burma)
• Brachypteryx stellata fusca – förekommer i bergsområden i norra Vietnam (nordvästra Tonkin)

Släktestillhörighet

Tidigare placerades arten i släktet Brachypteryx och vissa gör det fortfarande.^[6] Genetiska studier visar dock att den utgör en egen utvecklingslinje.^[7][8]

Familjetillhörighet

Pärlkortvigen ansågs fram tills nyligen liksom bland andra stenskvättor, rödstjärtar och buskskvättor vara små trastar. DNA-studier visar dock att de är marklevande flugsnappare (Muscicapidae) och förs därför numera till den familjen.^[9][10]

Levnadssätt

Pärlkortvingen häckar i mycket höglänt miljö, i Himalaya över 3300 meters höjd i blockrika marker över trädgränsen, ofta långt från växtlighet. Vintertid ses den på lägre nivåer i raviner i rhododendron- och barrskogar, bambu och städsegrön skog nära vattendrag på mellan 1800 och 2450 meters höjd. Den håller mest till på marken på jakt efter insekter och frön. Fågeln rapporteras häcka mellan maj och juli, i övrigt är dess häckningsbiologi okänd.^[5][4]

Status och hot

Arten har ett stort utbredningsområde och en stor population med stabil utveckling och tros inte vara utsatt för något substantiellt hot.^[1] Utifrån dessa kriterier kategoriserar internationella naturvårdsunionen IUCN arten som livskraftig (LC).^[1] Världspopulationen har inte uppskattats men den beskrivs dock som fåtalig och lokalt förekommande, i Kina sällsynt.^[11]
