Das Feuerkehl-Glanzschwänzchen (Metallura eupogon), auch Rotkehl-Glanzschwänzchen genannt, ist eine Vogelart aus der Familie der Kolibris (Trochilidae), die in Peru endemisch ist. Der Bestand wird von der IUCN als nicht gefährdet (Least Concern) eingeschätzt. Die Art gilt als monotypisch.[1]
Das Feuerkehl-Glanzschwänzchen erreicht eine Körperlänge von etwa 11 cm, bei einem Gewicht 5 g. Das Männchen hat einen mittellangen geraden schwarzen Schnabel. Die Ober- und Unterseite ist fast durchgängig gelblich olivgrün mit bronzefarbenem Schimmer. Der schmale Kehlfleck ist orange. Der Schwanz schillert himmelblau mit einer grünen Tönung auf der Oberseite und einer gelbgrünen Tönung auf der Unterseite. Das Weibchen ist sehr ähnlich doch ist der Kehlfleck unvollkommen. Die äußeren Steuerfedern haben helle Spitzen. Jungtiere ähneln den Weibchen.[2]
Das Feuerkehl-Glanzschwänzchen bezieht seinen Nektar wohl von ähnlichen Pflanzen wie das Schuppenbauch-Glanzschwänzchen.[2] So gehört z. B. der Nektar von Brachyotum ledifolium zu seinen Nektarquellen.[3]
Im Juni bis Juli wurden Feuerkehl-Glanzschwänzchen mit vergrößerten Gonaden untersucht. Ein Gelege besteht aus zwei weißen Eiern, die vom Weibchen bebrütet werden.[2]
Der Jagdruf klingt fast identisch mit dem des Kupferglanzschwänzchens (Metallura theresiae Simon, 1902) und des Schuppenbauch-Glanzschwänzchens (Metallura aeneocauda (Gould, 1846)). Der Gesang besteht aus einer abnehmenden Serie von drei bis sechs piepsigen Tönen, denen wiederholte lebhafte ungeordnete Phrasen, die wie trt-tsi-sii-sii-su..trr-tsi-tsu..trr-tsi-tsu.. klingen, folgen. Die Struktur ähnelt anderen Mitglieder der Gattung.[2]
Das Feuerkehl-Glanzschwänzchen bevorzugt offene Waldwiesen mit Schwarzmundgewächs- und Heidekrautgewächsgestrüpp in moosbeschichteten Zwergen- und Elfenwald, die sich mit andiner Grasebene (Pajonal) und Habitat mit Gestrüpp entlang der Baumgrenze abwechselt. Außerdem streift es in der angrenzenden Páramo Graslandschaft umher. Es bewegt sich in Höhenlagen zwischen 2900 und 4000 Meter: Am häufigsten ist es über 3500 Meter anzutreffen.[2]
Das Feuerkehl-Glanzschwänzchen gilt normalerweise als Standvogel, auch wenn keine gesicherten Daten vorliegen. Es wird vermutet, dass es eventuell als saisonaler Strichvogel zwischen den Höhenlagen wandert.[2]
Die Erstbeschreibung des Feuerkehl-Glanzschwänzchens erfolgte 1874 durch Jean Louis Cabanis unter dem wissenschaftlichen Namen Urolampra eupogon. Das Typusexemplar wurde von Konstanty Roman Jelski bei Maraynioc gesammelt.[4] 1847 führte Gould dann die neue Gattung Metallura ein.[5][A 1] Das Wort Metallura leitet sich von den griechischen Worten »metallon μεταλλον« für »Metall« und »oura ουρά« für »Schwanz« ab.[6] Der Artname eupogon ist ein griechisches Wortgebilde aus »eu ευ« für »fein, schön« und »pōgōn, pōgōnos πωγων, πωγωνος« für »Bart«.[7]

The fiery-throated metaltail is monotypic. However, what are now the violet-throated metaltail (M. baroni) and neblina metaltail (M. odomae) were at times treated as subspecies of the fiery-throated.[3][5][6]
The fiery-throated metaltail is about 11 cm (4.3 in) long and weighs about 5 g (0.18 oz). It has a medium length, straight, black bill. The adult male is almost entirely yellowish olive-green with bronzy overtones. Its slightly forked tail is iridescent sky blue with a green tinge on its upper side and glittering yellow-green on its underside. Its gorget is orange. The adult female is similar the male but its gorget is smaller. Juveniles are similar to the female.[6]
The fiery-throated metaltail is found on the eastern slope of the central Andes of Peru, from just south of the Huallaga River in the Department of Huánuco south to the Apurímac River in the Department of Cuzco. Like most of the metaltails, the species inhabits the edges of dwarf and elfin forests and páramo, moist landscapes characterized by shrubby growth and small trees. It also occurs in glades within the forest. In elevation it ranges between 2,900 and 4,000 m (9,500 and 13,100 ft) and is most common above 3,500 m (11,500 ft).[6]
The fiery-throated metaltail is believed to be sedentary but some seasonal elevational movement is possible.[6]
The fiery-throated metaltail's diet and feeding practices are not known. They are assumed to be similar to those of other metaltails, which feed on nectar from a variety of flowering plants and also catch small arthropods by sallies from a perch; males defend feeding territories.[6]
The fiery-throated metaltail's breeding phenology and nest have not been documented. Its breeding season appears to include June and July.[6]
The fiery-throated metaltail's chase call is "a descending series of 3–6 squeaky notes, followed by a repeated, buzzy, jumbled phrase, 'trt-tsee-seee-seee-sew..trr-tsee-tsew..trr-tsee-tsew..'."[6]
The IUCN has assessed the fiery-throated metaltail as being of Least Concern. Its population size is not known and is believed to be decreasing.[1] It is "[p]resently not at risk due to its wide distribution and its generalized ecology...[but] may be vulnerable because of its small range" where burning of páramo to create grazing pasture is a threat.[6]
