Monopeltis is a genus of amphisbaenians in the family Amphisbaenidae. Species in the genus are commonly known as worm lizards, even though they are not lizards. The genus is endemic to southern Africa. 19 species are placed in this genus.

Zasięg występowania

Rodzaj obejmuje gatunki występujące w Kamerunie, Gwinei Równikowej, Gabonie, Republice Środkowoafrykańskiej, Demokratycznej Republice Konga, Angoli, Zambii, Malawi, Mozambiku, Zimbabwe, Botswanie, Namibii i Południowej Afryce[3].

Systematyka

Etymologia

  • Monopeltis: gr. μονος monos „pojedynczy”[4]; πελτη peltē „mała tarcza bez obramowania” (tj. łuska)[5].
  • Phractogonus: gr. φρακτος phraktos „osłonięty, chroniony”, od φρασσω phrassō „ogrodzić, osłonić”; γωνια gōnia „róg, kąt”[2]. Gatunek typowy: Phractogonus galeatus Hallowell, 1852.
