Puncturella spirigera Thiele 1912

Description ( Anglèis )

fornì da NMNH Antarctic Invertebrates

Puncturella spirigera Thiele, 1912 (Figs 125, 127)

Puncturella spirigera Thiele, 1912: 186, pl. 11, figs 4-10; Powell, 1958: 180; Powell, 1960: 127.

MATERIAL EXAMINED: NZOI Stns A454, A522, A523, A526, A527; Eltanin Stns 1535, 1870, 1996, 2005, 2081, 2021, 2121, 2128.

DISTRIBUTION: Almost certainly circumantarctic; also South Shetlands and South Georgia. Within the Ross Sea it has been collected from 171-2804 m. As noted below the antarctic P. spirigera probably forms part of a complex with wide distribution in the colder waters of the southern hemisphere.

REMARKS: Arnaud (1972c:113) considered that P. spirigera Thiele was another synonym of the widely distributed Puncturella conica Orbigny. While agreeing with this synonymy, the writer has found that detailed comparisons with other southern hemisphere groups shows a much wider relationship. In the meantime "spirigera" is recorded as a member of the Ross Sea fauna.”
