Der wissenschaftliche Name Chaetostoma setzt sich aus χαιτη (chaite) „Haar“ und στόμα (stoma) „Mund“ zusammen.
Gebirgsbachharnischwelse leben in schnell fließenden, sauerstoffreichen Fließgewässern der Anden im nördlichen Südamerika bis zu einer Höhe von 3.500 Metern über dem Meeresspiegel. Laut GBIF wurden Exemplare unterschiedlicher Arten in Panama, Peru, Brasilien, Ecuador, Kolumbien und Venezuela gefangen und katalogisiert.[1][2]
Es handelt sich dabei um kleine Fische mit relativ großem Maul und kleinen Augen. Die ungepanzerte Bauchseite und die breite nackte Schnauze ohne Barteln sind die besten Merkmale zur Unterscheidung von Gebirgsbachharnischwelsen von anderen Gattungen in der Familie der Harnischwelse.[3] Die Fische sind grau bis schwarz gefärbt. Einige Arten weisen gelbe Punkte bzw. einen weißen oder gelben Streifen an der Schwanzflosse auf.
Chaetostoma-Männchen haben einen etwas größeren und breiteren Kopf, am Bauch einen etwas schmaleren Körper, sowie sehr große Bauchflossen und/oder Brustflossen. Es wird vermutet, dass die großen Bauchflossen eine Rolle bei der Befruchtung der Eier spielen.
Nach Deutschland werden für die Aquaristik vor allem die Arten C. formosae (als "C. thomasi") und C. joropo (als "C. milesi") exportiert. Zur artgerechten Haltung gehören Temperaturen zwischen 20 und 23 Grad[4], sauerstoffreiches Wasser, sowie ausreichend Strömung im Aquarium. Für Arten aus niedriger liegenden Ursprungsregionen ist auch die Haltung bei etwas höheren Temperaturen möglich. Gebirgsbachharnischwelse wurden bereits erfolgreich nachgezüchtet.
Johann Jakob von Tschudi beschrieb 1845 in seinem Werk "Untersuchungen über die Fauna Peruana" Chaetostoma loborhynchos als erste, der Gattung Chaetostoma zugehörige, Art.[5]

Chaetostoma viven en ríos correntosos y ricos en oxígeno en los andes en América del Sur hasta una altitud de 3 500 m sobre el nivel del mar. Según GBIF se capturó y se catalogizó ejemplares de distintas especies en Panamá, Perú, Brasil, Ecuador, Colombia, y Venezuela.[1][2]
Se trata de peces pequeñas con una boca relativamente grande y ojos pequeños. El vientre no acorozado y la boca ancha sin bigote son los características más representativas para distinguirlos de otros géneros de la familia de Loricáridos.[3] Los peces son de color gris a negro. Unas especies tienen puntos amarillos o una raya blanca o amarilla en la aleta caudal.
Los machos de Chaetostoma tienen una cabeza algo más grande y más ancha, en el vientre un cuerpo algo más estrecho, y aletas ventrales y / o dorsales muy grandes. Probablemente las aletas ventrales grandes juegan un rol en la fecundación de los huevos.
A Europa se exporta sobre todo las especies C. thomasi y C. milesi. Necesitan temperaturs entre 20 y 23º C.,[4] agua, rico en oxígeno, y corriente suficiente en el acuario. Especies de Chaetosoma ya se crio varias veces con éxito. Puede llegar a medir entre 10 cm y 12 cm.
Johann Jakob von Tschudi describió 1845 en su obra Untersuchungen über die Fauna Peruana Chaetostoma loborhynchos como primera especie perteniciendo al género Chaetostoma.[5]

Тулуб масивний, широкий, у низки видів — стрункий. Черево у самців більш струнке, у самиць — округле. Спинний плавець доволі великий й довгий. Грудні плавці широкі, у самців вони більш розвинені. У деяких видів на цих плавцях є шипики. Черевні плавці практично не поступаються грудним. Анальний плавець невеличкий. Жировий плавець крихітний. Хвостовий плавець доволі широкий.
Загальне забарвлення коливається від сірого до чорного кольору. Усе тіло вкрито жовтими цяточками або білими чи жовтими смужками.
Є демерсальними рибами. Воліють до прісних чистих водойм, полюбляють швидкі течії, зокрема гірські потоки. Зустрічаються на висоті 3500 м над рівнем моря. Активні вночі. Вдень ховаються у печерах та різних укриттях. Живляться переважно рослинністю, насамперед водоростями та детритом, також вживають тваринну їжу (безхребетних, дрібних риб).
Ікру відкладають у спеціально вирину нору біля каміння або скелі. Вважається, що великі черевні плавники грають роль в заплідненні яєць.
Поширені у водоймах Панами, Венесуели, Колумбії, Еквадора і Перу. Деякі види зустрічаються в Бразилії.

Это донные рыбы. Предпочитают жить в чистых пресных водоёмах, любят быстрые течения, в частности горные потоки[2]. Встречаются на высоте 3500 м над уровнем моря. Активные ночью. Днём прячутся в пещерах и различных укрытиях. Питаются преимущественно растительностью, прежде всего водорослями и детритом, также употребляют животную пищу (беспозвоночных, мелких рыб).
Икру откладывают в специально вырытую нору возле камней или скалы. Считается, что крупные брюшные плавники играют роль в оплодотворении яиц.
Распространены в водоёмах Панамы, Венесуэлы, Колумбии, Эквадора и Перу. Некоторые виды встречаются в Бразилии.
