Uraeotyphlus ist eine Gattung kleiner Schleichenlurche (Gymnophiona), die nur im südwestlichen Indien vorkommt, vor allem in den Böden tropischer Wälder in den Westghats in Kerala.
Uraeotyphlus-Arten werden etwa 30 Zentimeter lang. Sie sind dunkelgrau oder braun gefärbt und ähneln den Fischwühlen (Ichthyophiidae), die im gleichen Lebensraum vorkommen. Als ursprüngliches Merkmal gilt, dass der Schädel aus vielen Knochen besteht. Im Unterschied zum endständigen Maul der Fischwühlen ist ihr Maul unterständig. Ihre Tentakel liegen weit vor den Augen, unterhalb der Nasenöffnungen. Der Körper ist durch zweifach unterteilte Hautfalten (Annuli) geringelt und von zahlreichen Schuppen bedeckt. Tertiäre Annuli fehlen. Uraeotyphlus-Arten haben einen kurzen Schwanz. Wie die Fischwühlen besitzen sie Tracheallungen.
Lebensweise und Vermehrung der Uraeotyphlus-Arten sind weitgehend unbekannt. Sie lebend wühlend in den Waldböden ihres Verbreitungsgebietes und vermehren sich wie die Nasen- und die Fischwühlen ovipar (eierlegend). Für Uraeotyphlus oxyurus sind freilebende Larven nachgewiesen.
Die Gattung war ursprünglich die einzige der monotypischen Familie Uraeotyphlidae, wird aber mittlerweile zur Familie der Fischwühlen (Ichthyophiidae) gezählt. Gemeinsamkeiten beider Taxa sind die außen am Herz klar sichtbare Trennung beider Arterien sowie ein circumorbitales Postfrontale.

Uraeotyphlus is a genus of caecilians in the family Ichthyophiidae.[1][2][3] There are seven species in this genus, all of which are endemic to the Western Ghats of southwestern India.[1] Previously, the genus has also been placed in its own monotypic family Uraeotyphlidae.[4][5]
Uraeotyphlus are relatively small sized caecilians ranging from 23 centimetres (9.1 in) to 35 centimetres (14 in) in length. Unlike the more 'advanced' caecilians, members of this genus have a true tail with vertebrae, and their skull has a relatively complex structure. However, unlike the more 'primitive' caecilians, the mouth is recessed below the snout, there are no tertiary annuli, and the tentacular opening are far forward of the eyes, and below the nostril.[6]
The pattern of annulation among species of Uraeotyphlus falls into two clear types based on the differentiation of primary and higher-order annuli, and the number of annular divisions per vertebra and whether this varies along the body. This difference is reflected in the recognition of U. oxyurus group (U. interruptus, U. menoni, U. narayani, U. oxyurus) and the U. malabaricus group (U. malabaricus and U. oommeni).[5]
They are burrowing animals, which lay eggs that hatch into free-living larvae.[6][3]

Общая длина представителей этого рода колеблется от 20 до 30 см. По своему строению похожи на род Ichthyophis. Отличием является череп, состоящий из многих костей. Рот большой, щупальца находятся вдали от глаз, под ноздрями. По бокам присутствуют кожные складки, покрытые чешуёй. Туловище стройное. Имеют трахеи, благодаря которым дышат. Третичные кольца отсутствуют, хвост довольно короткий. Окраска тёмно-серая или коричневая.
Населяют тропические леса в горной местности. Всю жизнь живут в почве, покрытой листьями. Питаются наземными беспозвоночными.
Это яйцекладущие земноводные. Самки откладывают яйца во влажную почву неподалеку от водоёма, где впоследствии развиваются личинки.
Являются эндемиками Индии, обитают в Западных Гатах.
