Parides photinus, the pink-spotted cattleheart, is a species of butterfly in the family Papilionidae. It was first described by Edward Doubleday in 1844.
Parides photinus has a wingspan reaching 90–100 millimetres (3.5–3.9 in). Adults are black with the hindwing having a blue-green metallic sheen, especially in the male. There are no wing bands. Two rows of red spots are found along the hindwing margin.[1][2] The submarginal spots are strongly arched except for the upper two or three and the anal one; the latter is distinct on the upperside only in the female. The hindwings have short tails. The undersides are similar to the upsides. The larvae feed on Aristolochia grandiflora and A. asclepiadifolia.[3][4] A full description is provided by Rothschild, W. and Jordan, K. (1906)[5]
This species can be found from Mexico to Costa Rica, in Nicaragua and in Honduras. It lives in forests, where it is common to abundant. Its range extends from the sea level to 5000 feet (1500 metres).[6]

La mariposa de manchas rojas (Parides photinus) es un miembro de la familia Papilionidae, en inglés recibe el nombre común de “pink-spotted cattleheart”, mientras que en el libro “Guía de mariposas de Nuevo León” se le aplica el nombre común de corola photinus. Se reportan como plantas hospederas a miembros del género Aristolochia (familia Aristolochiaceae).[1][2][3]
Los huevecillos son de color naranja, y son depositados de manera individual en las plantas hospederas; las orugas son negras con tubérculos rojos y blancos. El adulto tiene alas de color negro con brillo azul metálico, presenta dos hileras de puntos rojos en las altas traseras, la primera hilera es en forma de puntos y la segunda en forma de “V”.[1][2][3]
Desde el noreste de México en estados como Nuevo león y Tamaulipas, a través de las vertientes del océano Pacífico y el golfo de México, en la zona de la Sierra Madre Occidental y Oriental, hasta Centroamérica.[1]
Prefiere sitios tropicales y subtropicales, se la observa en distintos tipos de vegetación natural como selva y vegetación riparia.[4]
Hasta el momento en México no se encuentra en ninguna categoría de protección, ni en la Lista Roja de la IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) ni en CITES (Convención sobre el Comercio Internacional de Especies Amenazadas de Fauna y Flora Silvestres).
