Annual or biennial. Stems branched at the base, the branches ascending or diffusely spreading, 1-8 dm. long, sparingly pubescent ; leaf-blades angular in outline, 2-4 cm. broad, long-petioled, the main divisions parted into linear segments ; petioles retrorsely pubescent ; peduncles and pedicels pubescent like the petioles, usually longer than the leaves ; sepals awn-tipped, the outer ones 10-12 mm. long, the bodies lanceolate, 3-ribbed, the slender tips about 2 mm. long ; petals rose-purple, somewhat longer than the sepals ; style-column fully 15 mm. long, strigillose ; carpel-bodies 3-3.5 mm. long, smooth and glabrous; seeds prominently reticulate.
Type locality : France.
Distribution : New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and South Dakota. Naturalized from Europe.
