A specimen of Bulbostylis capillaris collected by E. Hall (#585) gives Oregon without a specific locality.

Bulbostylis capillaris is distributed over a broad range of physiographic types and occurs in many forms, the most distinctive of ours being var. crebra, which has, in addition to numerous long scaped anthelae, large numbers of spikelets at the plant base.

Herbs, annual, cespitose. Culms to 30 cm, bases soft. Leaves spreading to ascending, ¼–1/3 length of scapes; sheath borders tan, backs prominently ribbed, glabrous; blades filiform, 0.5 mm wide, involute, margins ciliate-scabrid, surface glabrous. Inflorescences solitary or more commonly in simple, open, rarely compact, involucrate anthelae; scapes filiform (rarely with several spikelets sessile or subsessile at plant base), prominently ribbed, glabrous; proximalmost involucral bract cuspidate or setaceous bladed, exceeding or exceeded by inflorescence. Spikelets red-brown, ovoid to lanceoloid, 3–5 mm; fertile scales ovate, 1.5–2 mm, apex acute, glabrous or distally puberulent, keel prominent, short-excurrent. Flowers: stamens (1–)2; anthers oblong-elliptic, 0.5–0.7 mm. Achenes yellowish to pale brown, trigonous-obovoid, 1 mm, faces rugose. 2n = 84.

Annual with fibrous roots ; culms glabrous, densely cespitose, filiform, 0.5-3.0 dm. high ; leaves capillary, scabrous on the margins, much shorter than the culms ; involucral bract very slender, usually exceeding the inflorescence ; inflorescence umbellate, often much reduced, sometimes becoming capitate ; spikelets ovoid-oblong, 2-7 mm. long, subacute ; scales dark brown, obtuse, fimbriate, with a strongly keeled, green midrib; stamens 2, the anthers 0.3 mm. long; achenes obovate, 0.75-0.9 mm. long, sharply angled, truncate, stramineous to pale brown, the surface undulate-rugose ; tubercle minute, conic.

Distribution: Sandy places: southern Maine to Minnesota, south to Texas and Florida; also in Oregon, California, New Mexico, and Arizona ; northern Mexico {Johnston 8145) ; very rare in Cuba.

Bulbostylis capillaris is a species of sedge known by the common names densetuft hairsedge and threadleaf beakseed. It is native to much of North America, South America and the West Indies from Canada to Bolivia.[3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13]

Bulbostylis capillaris grows in many types of habitat, generally in moist areas such as streamside meadows. It is an annual herb which is somewhat variable in appearance but generally takes the form of a small, upright tuft of green herbage growing close to the ground, between 10 and 24 centimeters tall. There are several stems surrounded by thready, thin leaves. The inflorescence occurs at the tip of the stem and is composed of tiny spikelets which are green washed with rusty red. The fruit is about a millimeter long.

Uses

Along with Piptochaetium montevidense and Juncus capillacaeus, Bulbostylis capillaris is used in Rio Grande do Sul as a medicinal plant in the form of a tisane to treat urinary tract infections (UTIs). This claim of antimicrobial activity against two common causes of UTIs, E. coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae, was investigated by Vogel et al. (2011) but found no evidence of effectiveness in treating bacterial infections.[14]
