Aloe squarrosa ist eine Pflanzenart der Gattung der Aloen in der Unterfamilie der Affodillgewächse (Asphodeloideae). Das Artepitheton squarrosa stammt aus dem Lateinischen, bedeutet ‚zurückgebogen‘ und verweist auf die raue Blattoberfläche.[1]
Aloe squarrosa wächst stammbildend und verzweigt von der Basis aus. Der hängende Stamm wird bis zu 40 Zentimeter lang. Die lanzettlich verschmälerten Laubblätter bilden Rosetten. Die hellgrüne Blattspreite ist 5 bis 7 Zentimeter lang und 2 bis 3 Zentimeter breit. Auf der Blattoberfläche sind zahlreiche weißliche, gerundete Flecken vorhanden. Die Blattoberfläche ist rau. Die festen, weißlichen Zähne am Blattrand sind 3 bis 4 Millimeter lang und stehen etwa 5 Millimeter voneinander entfernt.
Der einfache Blütenstand ist in der Regel hängend und bogig-aufsteigend. Er erreicht eine Länge von 10 bis 20 Zentimeter. Die lockeren, zylindrischen Trauben sind 6 Zentimeter lang und 4,5 Zentimeter breit. Die deltoiden Brakteen weisen eine Länge von 5 Millimeter auf. Die scharlachroten Blüten stehen an 7 bis 8 Millimeter langen Blütenstielen. Sie sind 23 bis 25 Millimeter lang und an ihrer Basis kurz verschmälert. Auf Höhe des Fruchtknotens weisen die Blüten einen Durchmesser von 5 Millimeter auf. Darüber sind sie leicht verengt und dann zu ihrer Mündung hin erweitert. Ihre Perigonblätter sind auf einer Länge von 5 bis 6 Millimetern nicht miteinander verwachsen. Die Staubblätter und der Griffel ragen 1 bis 2 Millimeter aus der Blüte heraus.
Die Chromosomenzahl beträgt 2 n = 14 {displaystyle 2n=14} 
Aloe squarrosa ist auf Sokotra im Westen auf Kalksteinklippen in Höhen von etwa 300 Metern verbreitet.
Die Erstbeschreibung durch John Gilbert Baker wurde 1883 veröffentlicht.[2] Synonyme sind Aloe concinna Baker (1898, nom. illeg. ICBN-Artikel 53.1) und Aloe zanzibarica Milne-Redh. (1947).
Aloe squarrosa wird in der Roten Liste gefährdeter Arten der IUCN als „Vulnerable (VU)“, d. h. gefährdet eingestuft.[3]

Aloe squarrosa has smooth, green, spotted leaves that curve backwards. These recurved leaves are kept only around the head or top of each stem, with dead leaves falling off the lower parts of the stem. The inflorescence is short and simple, and the flowers are light orange with green tips. It is relatively rare in cultivation.
It is frequently confused with Aloe juvenna from Kenya. However the more common Aloe juvenna has shorter, straight, non-recurved triangular leaves and grows long stems, with the leaves retained all along the stems.

La lámina de color verde mide de 5 a 7 cm de largo y de 2 a 3 cm de ancho. En la superficie de las hojas aparecen numerosas manchas blancas y redondeadas. La superficie de las hojas es áspera. Los dientes sólidos, blanquecinos están en el borde de la hoja y miden de 3 a 4 milímetros de longitud y aproximadamente a 5 milímetros de distancia. La inflorescencia simple suele se colgante y arqueado ascendente. Alcanza una longitud de 10 a 20 centímetros. Las flores son escarlatas de 23 a 25 milímetros de largo, y su base estrechada.
Aloe squarrosa está restringida a los acantilados de la meseta de piedra caliza en el extremo occidental de Socotra, también rara vez se encuentran lejos de los acantilados en la protección de arbustos como Buxanthus hildebrandtii, a una altitud de 300-530 metros.[3]
Aloe squarrosa fue descrita por Baker ex Balf.f. y publicado en Proceedings of the Royal Society of Edinburgh 12: 97, en el año 1884.[4]

Fa parte della tipologia delle succulente con portamento a rosetta. Le sue foglie sono lanceolate con margini dentati, di colore verde acceso, con delle macchiette di colore più chiaro, quasi bianco.
La fioritura, che si può ammirare da giugno a settembre, presenta pannocchie di fiori rossi lunghe 10–25 cm, molto simili a quelli di Aloe vera.
La propagazione si ha per seme e per talea, quest'ultima con poco sforzo e difficoltà. Il periodo in cui far riprodurre la pianta non è influente, basta avere delle accortezze: infatti se si decide di farla riprodurre in casa, quindi riscaldata anche d'inverno, si può praticare in qualsiasi momento; in caso in cui si voglia far riprodurre all'esterno i semi vanno seminati a febbraio-marzo per avere delle piantine in estate e abbastanza forti a ottobre-novembre quando incomincia ad abbassarsi la temperatura. Se si intende procedere per talea staccare un rametto a inizio primavera cosicché in autunno ha già radicato abbastanza per sopportare il freddo.
I semi vanno seminati appena questi sono maturi, la temperatura ideale sarebbe di 21 °C.
Nel caso in cui si voglia far moltiplicare la pianta per talea bisogna separare i germogli a tarda primavera o inizio estate. Questi dovranno poi essere piantati ancora senza radici in un terriccio specifico per cactaceae. Un altro modo è quello di prendere i germogli di 10cm appena recisi e metterli ammollo in un bicchiere con dell'acqua fresca, anche di rubinetto. Cambiare l'acqua quando si presenta di colore marrone scuro. Appena il germoglio ha messo delle piccole radici è pronto per essere piantato in vaso o in piena terra, avendo cura di levare le eventuali foglie marce che potrebbero svilupparsi nel lungo contatto con l'acqua.
