Pileus fleshy but thin, centrally depressed or infundibuliform, 4-5 cm. broad; surface hygrophanous, glabrous or nearly so, blackish-brown or grayish-brown when moist, paler when dry, margin smooth or occasionally striate when old: context concolorous, separable into two horizontal layers; lamellae distant, adnate or decurrent, united behind, dingy or grayishbrown: spores ellipsoid, 8-9 X '51^5 fi: stipe equal or slightly tapering upward, stuffed or hollow, fibrillose, obscurely reticulate on account of the fibrils, concolorous, 5-10 cm. long, 2-5 mm. thick.
Type locality: Camiola.
Habitat: Decaying wood or on the ground in woods or in mossy fields.
Distribution: Temperate North America south to South Carolina and west to Oregon; also in Europe.
