Interorbital space flat. Maxilla covered with scales. Dorsal and anal fin bases without scales. Upper caudal lobe becoming greatly elongated with increased growth. Scale rows on back parallel with lateral line. Back and upper sides deep pink to red; lower sides and belly pink; fins pink to red.

廣泛分布於印度-太平洋之熱帶海域。西起非洲東岸，東至夏威夷，北自南日本，南迄澳洲。台灣主要分布於東部及南部海域。

世界各沿岸國重要之漁獲物，主要是以深海一支釣捕獲。台灣東部產量甚豐。一般以蒸食或味噌湯食之。

體呈長紡錘形；標準體長約為體高之3.18倍。兩眼間隔平扁。眼前方無溝槽。下頜突出於上頜；上頜骨末端延伸至眼中部的下方；上頜骨被鱗。上下頜具多列細齒，外列齒擴大；上下頜前端具2-4犬齒；鋤骨具寬的新月形齒帶。鰓耙數22。體被中大型櫛鱗，背鰭及臀鰭上均裸露無鱗；側線完全且平直。軟硬背鰭間具深缺刻；背鰭與臀鰭最末之軟條皆延長而較前方鰭條長；背鰭硬棘X，軟條11；臀鰭硬棘III，軟條8；胸鰭長約等於頭長；尾鰭深分叉，上下葉緣尖細，上葉較下葉長，可及體長33％左右。體一致為鮮紅色，腹部較淡色；尾鰭下葉末端無白緣。依據 Nelson(1994)將其置於笛鯛(Lutjanidae)科中的濱鯛亞科(Etelinae)。

主要棲息於沿岸礁石區，水深100-400公尺處。主要攝食魚類、烏賊及甲殼類等。
