Description: Body silvery with vermiculations irregular yellow on dorsal side up to midlateral; dorsal, pectoral and pelvic fins colorless; dorsal fin spinous membrane margin black; anal fin anterior yellow. Nuchal spine on nape. Mouth pointing forward when protracted. Head and breast scaleless. Scales minute. Body depth max 2.0-2.5 in SL. (Ref. 2108, 90102)

體橢圓形而側扁;背、腹部輪廓相當。體長為體高的2.15-2.52倍。眼上緣具二鼻後棘。上頜具一列尖齒,每一側前端具一犬齒,下頜也有少許犬齒;口裂斜,口可向前方伸出,有如管狀;吻部稍短於眼徑;下頜輪廓呈直線,向上成45度角。頭部不具鱗;體被圓鱗,除胸鰭基部至臀鰭起點間之三角形區域裸出外,其他部位均被鱗;腹鰭具腋鱗,背鰭及臀鰭具鞘鱗;側線完全,延伸至尾柄處。背鰭單一,硬棘部和軟條相連;胸鰭發達,似鐮刀形;尾柄細窄,尾鰭深叉形。體背銀灰色,體側銀白;體側另具不規則的暗色條紋和斑塊。各鰭淡黃或色淡。
棲地

沿岸砂泥底棲性魚類,棲息水深在1-40公尺之間;以小魚、蝦蟹或多毛類為食;適溫26~29℃;產卵期時,會游入河口區產卵。

It is found in the Indo-Pacific from the Red Sea and the east African coast east through the Indian and Pacific Oceans to Australia and Tahiti north as far as the Ryukyu Islands. It occurs over sandy and silty bottoms, although the young prefer mangroves and silty reefs. it feeds using its protruding pipette-like mouth or using the gill rakers as seives.
