體呈卵圓形而側扁。吻短而略尖。眼中大,上側位。口小,上頜骨末端不及眼前緣;齒單列,齒端具缺刻。眶下骨具鱗,後緣則平滑;前鰓蓋骨後緣亦平滑。體被大櫛鱗;側線之有孔鱗片20-21個。背鰭單一,軟條部延長而呈尖形,硬棘XIII,軟條14-15;臀鰭硬棘II,軟條13-15;胸鰭鰭條19-20;尾鰭叉形,末端呈圓形,上下葉外側鰭條不延長呈絲狀。體呈灰黃色或黃褐色,體側有6至7條黑色橫帶,其中第一條位於鰓蓋上方,較不明顯,第七條在尾柄上,有時亦不太明顯。胸鰭基底上方有一小黑斑;鰓蓋骨後緣上方不具黑點;尾柄除黑色橫帶外,無其它黑點。

棲地

It is a marine species native to the tropical Indo-Pacific, where it ranges from the eastern Indian Ocean to Australia and Japan in the Pacific Ocean, and it is not known to occur in the Red Sea. Adults of the species are typically found in coral reef and lagoon environments at a depth of 1 to 6 m (3 to 20 ft), where they typically occur singly or in small groups.[3]

Bengal sergeants feed primarily on algae, gastropods, and crabs. The species is known to be highly territorial, and distinct pairs between individuals are formed during breeding. It is known to be oviparous, with males guarding and aerating eggs. The species reaches 17 cm (6.7 inches) in total length.[3]
