體呈卵圓形而側扁。吻短而略尖。眼中大,上側位。口小,上頜骨末端不及眼前緣;齒單列,齒端具缺刻。眶下骨具鱗,後緣則平滑;前鰓蓋骨後緣亦平滑。體被大櫛鱗;側線之有孔鱗片20-22個。背鰭單一,軟條部不延長而呈圓形,硬棘XIII,軟條12-14;臀鰭硬棘II,軟條11-13;胸鰭鰭條17-19;尾鰭叉形,末端略呈尖形,上下葉外側鰭條不延長呈絲狀。體呈灰白色至黃褐色,體側有6-7條不甚明顯之暗灰色寬橫帶。胸鰭基底上方有一小黑斑;鰓蓋骨後緣上方無黑點;尾柄上無黑點。尾鰭一致為黑褐色。

Die sewebalk-nooientjie (Abudefduf septemfasciatus) is 'n vis wat voorkom in die westelike Stille Oseaan en die Indiese Oseaan, meer spesifiek aan die ooskus van Afrika suidwaarts tot by die suide van KwaZulu-Natal. In Engels staan die vis bekend as die Sevenbar damsel.

Identifikasie

Die vis word tot 19cm lank en is liggeel met 6 tot 7 donker vertikale breë, strepe op die sye en die kop. Somtyds is die streep oor die kop vaag. Die strepe word donkerder gedurende paartyd en wanneer die vis se gemoedstoestand verander. Die vis is territoriaal van aard en aggressief. Hulle leef in rots kusareas en vlak riwwe wat as gevolg van golfaksie ontbloot word in water wat 0.3 tot 4m diep is. Die onvolwasse vissies word in gety poele gevind. Hulle is alleenlopers en kan ook in klein groepies voorkom. Die vis vreet alge en klein ongewerweldes.

Die vis kan verwar word met die kolnooientjie (Abudefduf sordidus).

Abudefduf septemfasciatus, commonly known as the banded sergeant, is a species of damselfish in the family Pomacentridae. The species is native to the Indo-Pacific and can reach 23 cm (9.1 inches) in total length.[3]

Habitat and ecology

Abudefduf septemfasciatus is a non-migratory marine fish associated with lagoons and coral reefs found at depths of 0 to 3 m (0 to 10 ft). The species is highly territorial and feeds on benthic algae and various invertebrates. It is oviparous, with individuals forming distinct pairs during breeding and males guarding and aerating eggs.[3]

Geographic distribution

Abudefduf septemfasciatus occurs in the Indo-Pacific, where it ranges from East Africa to the Line and Tuamotu Islands, north to southern Japan, and south to the southern Great Barrier Reef.[3]
