Body greatly elongate, depth at gill opening 33.2 (27.1-44.8) in total length, anus behind midbody; body and fins unpatterned, uniformly black-brown; preanal length 1.71 in TL, head length 10.30 in TL. Maxillary and dentary teeth uniserial, few in number, long and needle-like. Mean vertebral formula 6-108-207 (Ref. 88934).

體極延長,全長為鰓裂高的33.2倍(27.1-44.8),前臀鰭長之1.71倍,頭長之10.3倍。肛門位於體中央之後;體與各鰭無任何花紋,整體為一致的黑棕色。上頜與齒骨之牙齒單行,齒數少,長形如針狀。平均脊椎骨式6-108-207。新鮮魚體時,頭部跟魚體幾乎全為黑色,無任何斑點或花紋;眼睛虹彩呈黃色。福馬林或酒精浸漬之體色呈灰或淺黑色,虹彩變為白色。新種黑身裸胸鯙具有以下諸項特徵而明顯不同於其同屬的長身裸胸鯙(/G. prolatus/): 1. 具有較長的前臀鰭長,前臀鰭長為全長的58.5 (56.6-59.5) %,長身裸胸鯙為48.9 (46.6-50.4) %;2. 具有較短的吻長,吻長為頭長的17.8 (14.9-20.5) %,長身裸胸鯙為20.0 (17.3-21.4) %; 3. 眼間寬為頭長的12.2 (9.2-14.1) %,長身裸胸鯙為14.3 (10.7-14.8) %;4)有較多的前臀椎骨數108(105-109),長身裸胸鯙為80(74-86);5. 有較多的總脊椎骨數207(201-211),長身裸胸鯙為183(174-190);6. 體黑色,長身裸胸鯙為棕色。

The black body moray (Gymnothorax melanosomatus) is an eel in the family Muraenidae (moray eels).[1] It was described by Loh Kar-Hoe, Shao Kwang-Tsao, and Chen Hong-Ming in 2011.[2] It is a tropical, marine eel which is known from southeastern Taiwan, off Changbin, Taitung to Shihtiping, Hualien City and in the Pacific Ocean. Males are known to reach a maximum total length of 49.6 cm, while females are known to reach a maximum of 50.4 cm.[1]

The species epithet melansomatus means "black body" in Ancient Greek, and like the eel's common name, it refers to the black colouring of the body.[2]
