Mouthbrooding by female.

Feeds on fish and shrimps (Ref. 558, 13624).

Inhabits relatively exposed areas with a mud bottom (Ref. 4983). The gut content of the specimens which were examined consisted of remains of the crustacean Caridina and fish fragments (Ref. 558).

Haplochromis decticostoma is a species of cichlid endemic to Lake Victoria. This species grows to a length of 22.9 centimetres (9.0 in) SL.
