Sometimes feeds at the surface (Ref. 4967). It feeds on other fishes, but grain, insects (e.g. Corethra edulis) and small crustaceans have also been found in stomach contents (Ref. 78218). A female was caught at Nkhata Bay at between 20 and 50 m of depth (Ref. 78218).

Bathyclarias nyasensis is a species of airbreathing catfish endemic to Lake Malawi, in the countries of Malawi, Mozambique and Tanzania. This species grows to a length of 100 cm SL (39.4 inches). This species is commercially caught for human consumption.
