Distinguished from all its congeners in Balkan Peninsula by the combination of the following characters: maxilla short (26-39% HL) but deep (11-14% HL); 21-23 gill rakers; body depth 25-28% SL; 15-17 scales between base of adipose and lateral line; back and upper part of head yellowish, lacking spots; black spots small and numerous, more dense below lateral line, red spots more evenly distributed (Ref. 59043).

Found in stretches with swift, clear water, and in small waterfalls. Spawns in spring (Ref. 59043).
