This species can be distinguished from all congeners except K. chapadae and K. geryi by the following characters: 6 rows of scales between the lateral line and the dorsal-fin origin (vs. 4 or 5 rows); differs from K. chapadae by possessing 5 rows of scales between the lateral line and the pelvic-fin origin (vs. 3Â½ or 4); 38-41 lateral line scales (vs. 36-38); differs from K. geryi by having 5 rows of scales between the lateral line and the pelvic-fin origin (vs. 4); 17-20 branched anal-fin rays (vs. 15-17), and in lacking the 2 symmetric, large, dark, blotches, which are present on the base of the caudal-fin lobes in K. geryi (Ref. 75798).

The are of occurrence, rÃo Shinahota, is a typical Andean piedmont drainage, with medium water velocity; mainly gravel and pebbles substrate; some years the river has an intermittent flow. This riparian forest is degraded and the river polluted by domestic waste (Ref. 75798).

Knodus shinahota is een straalvinnige vissensoort uit de familie van de karperzalmen (Characidae).^[1] De wetenschappelijke naam van de soort is voor het eerst geldig gepubliceerd in 2007 door Ferreira & Carvajal.
