The Clipperton angelfish (Holacanthus limbaughi) is a species of marine ray-finned fish, a marine angelfish belonging to the family Pomacanthidae. It is endemic to Clipperton Island, a French possession in the eastern Pacific Ocean.
The Clipperton angelfish has a deep, laterally compressed body. It has a small mouth that has bristle-like teeth. The preoperculum has a sizeable spine at its corner and a serrated rear margin while there are 4 spines between the preoperculum and the operculum.[3] The juveniles are a dark bluish-grey on their bodies, which is marked with a number of vertical blue bars, 2 on the head and 5 on the flanks, these fade as they mature into adults.[4] They also have a white spot on the upper side and white caudal and pectoral fins. The adults are similar, lacking the barring, and have vivid blue margins to the dorsal, anal and pelvic fins. The dorsal fin contains 14 spines and 17-18 soft rays while the anal fin has 3 spines and 17-18 soft rays.[3] This species attains a maximum total length of 30 centimetres (12 in).[5]
The Clipperton angelfish is endemic to the waters of the French overseas territory of Clipperton Island, which is 2,560 kilometres (1,590 mi) west of Costa Rica, in the Eastern Pacific Ocean.[5]
The Clipperton angelfish is found at depths between 6 and 100 metres (20 and 328 ft). Very little is known about its habitat preferences and biology.[1]
The Clipperton angelfish was first formally described in 1963 by the American ichthyologist Wayne J. Baldwin.[6] The specific name honours the American scuba diver, zoologist and underwater photographer Conrad Limbaugh (1925–1960) who played a vital role in the collection of the type.[7]
The Clipperton angelfish has such a remote and restricted distribution that it is extremely scarce in the aquarium trade. When it has appeared in that trade it has commanded very high prices.[1] In 2009, a California tropical fish dealer was caught trying to bring 52 illegally collected Clipperton angelfish into the United States, falsely declaring them as king angelfish to federal wildlife authorities.[8] He intended to sell the fish for $10,000 each.[9]

Es un pez ángel típico, con un cuerpo corto y comprimido lateralmente, y una pequeña boca, con dientes diminutos rematados como cepillos. Sus aletas dorsal y anal desarrollan un filamento en sus ángulos posteriores, aunque menos largos que en otras especies del género. Cuenta con una fuerte espina en el ángulo del preopérculo. Tiene 14 espinas dorsales, entre 17 y 18 radios blandos dorsales, 3 espinas anales y entre 17 y 18 radios blandos anales. La aleta caudal es recta en su margen posterior.[5]
De adulto, la coloración base del cuerpo, cabeza, y las aletas dorsal, anal y pélvicas, es azul grisáceo, con los bordes de éstas en azul eléctrico. Junto al borde posterior de las aletas pectorales, cuenta con una pequeña mancha blanca distintiva.
Los especímenes jóvenes tienen la coloración de la cabeza y del cuerpo marrón grisáceo. Añaden a su librea hasta 7 rayas verticales, de color azul, de las cuales dos en la cabeza.
Los machos, que son mayores que las hembras, miden hasta 25 centímetros de largo.[6]
Es una especie asociada a arrecifes y clasificada como no migratoria. Son comunes cerca de las orillas, entre 6 y 10 m de profundidad.[7]
Su rango de profundidad es entre 2 y 100 metros.[8]
Se distribuye en el océano Pacífico este, exclusivamente en el atolón de Clipperton, que pertenece a Francia. La isla tiene menos de 10 km² y, aproximadamente, unos 4 km² de arrecifes.[1]
Es omnívoro, y se alimenta de esponjas, huevos de invertebrados, gastrópodos, crustáceos, gusanos, moluscos, así como varias especies de algas.[5]
Aunque apenas se dispone de información específica sobre su ciclo de vida, como todas las del género, esta especie es dioica y ovípara. Su comportamiento sexual es poligínico, reuniendo el macho un harén de unas 4 hembras, a las que corteja y fertiliza alternativamente. Los machos se comunican con las hembras mediante cambios temporales de coloración durante el cortejo. La fertilización es externa, desovando en parejas. Cada año tienen, al menos, una estación clara de desove.
Tras la fertilización, los huevos flotan en la columna de agua durante 15 a 20 horas, hasta que eclosionan en larvas transparentes, que absorben el saco vitelino en 48 horas. Las larvas crecen rápidamente alimentándose de plancton, y cuando alcanzan los 15-20 mm mutan a la forma juvenil.
No cuidan a sus alevines. Su nivel de resiliencia es medio, doblando la población en un periodo entre 1.4 a 4.4 años.[9]

Holacanthus limbaughi is een straalvinnige vissensoort uit de familie van engel- of keizersvissen (Pomacanthidae).[2] De wetenschappelijke naam van de soort is voor het eerst geldig gepubliceerd in 1963 door Baldwin.
De soort staat op de Rode Lijst van de IUCN als Gevoelig, beoordelingsjaar 2009. De omvang van de populatie is volgens de IUCN stabiel.[1]

H. limbaughi là loài đặc hữu của đảo Clipperton (Pháp) ở phía đông Thái Bình Dương. Chúng thường sống gần bờ ở độ sâu 6 – 10 m, nhưng cũng có thể xuất hiện ở độ sâu hơn 100 m[1][2][3]. Rất ít thông tin về loài này.
Hiện tượng El Nino có thể gây ra sự suy giảm nghiêm trọng và nhanh chóng đối với các loài sống ở khu vực nước nông thuộc vùng nhiệt đới phía đông Thái Bình Dương, trong đó có H. limbaughi. Vì thế mà chúng được liệt vào Loài sắp bị đe dọa[1].
H. limbaughi trưởng thành có thể dài khoảng 24 – 25 cm. Ở cá thể trưởng thành, thân của H. limbaughi có màu lam xám với một đốm trắng nhỏ ở thân trên, gần vây lưng. Vây bụng và vây đuôi có màu trắng muốt, trong khi vây ngực, vây đuôi và vây hậu môn có màu xanh xám như thân. Ngoại trừ vây đuôi, các vây còn lại có một đường viền màu xanh lơ. Cá con có màu xám sẫm với 7 sọc hẹp trên cơ thể, trong đó có hai cái ở đầu[3][4].

Thức ăn của H. limbaughi có lẽ là những loài động vật giáp xác, động vật không xương sống và rong tảo[4].

本魚體側扁，略呈長橢圓，口小，體色為鐵灰藍色，幼魚則體側具有許多藍色的細直條紋。腹鰭與尾鰭白色，背鰭和臀期邊緣具藍色邊。體側有一明顯的白斑，體長可達25公分。
本魚棲息於珊瑚礁或岩礁區。
可做為觀賞魚。
