Inhabits shallow waters, being especially abundant over mud bottoms in mangrove-lined lagoons or creeks; larger individuals may also occur on vegetated sand grounds in marine areas. Enters fresh water in limestone regions (Ref. 7251). May occur in aggregations (Ref. 3722). Probably feeds on small benthic invertebrates (Ref. 3722). Foraged over the bottom by swimming at about 3-4 cm above the bottom and stopped at a selected site. It tilts its body by about 45° and protrude its mouth and buried it into the sand. Sediment are ejected through its mouth and gill openings producing a scattered sandy cloud of thin sediment (Ref. 40104). See Ref. 42268.

Eucinostomus gula és una espècie de peix pertanyent a la família dels gerrèids.[5]

Descripció

  • Pot arribar a fer 23 cm de llargària màxima (normalment, en fa 15).
  • 9 espines i 10-10 radis tous a l'aleta dorsal i 3 espines i 7 radis tous a l'anal.[6][7][8]

Alimentació

Menja probablement petits invertebrats bentònics.[9]

Depredadors

Als Estats Units és depredat per la barracuda (Sphyraena barracuda).[10][11]

Hàbitat

És un peix d'aigua dolça, salabrosa i marina; associat als esculls[12] i de clima subtropical (43°N-51°S) que viu fins als 55 m de fondària.[6][13]

Distribució geogràfica

Es troba a l'Atlàntic occidental: des de Massachusetts i Bermuda fins a l'Argentina, incloent-hi el golf de Mèxic i el mar Carib.[6][14][15][16][17][18][19][20][21][22][23][24][25][26][27][28][29][30][31][32][33][34][35][36][37][38][39][40][41][42][43][44][45][46][47]

Ús comercial

Es comercialitza fresc però la seua carn no és gaire apreciada.[9]

Observacions

O carapicu (Eucinostomus gula) é uma espécie de peixe que habita o Oceano Atlântico desde a América do Norte até a Bahia. Chega a medir até 25 centímetros de comprimento. Tais peixes possuem aspecto prateado, com o dorso esverdeado e o ventre branco. Também são conhecidos pelos nomes de acarapicu, carapau, carapeba, carapicu-branco, carapicupeba, primitura,[1] carataí e carcunda.

Etimologia

"Carapicu" e "acarapicu" provêm do tupi antigo akarapuku, "acará comprido".[2] "Carapicupeba" provém do tupi antigo akarapukupeba, "acará comprido achatado".[3]
