Chaetodon nigropunctatus, the black-spotted butterflyfish, is a species off marine ray-finned fish, a butterflyfish, belonging to the family Chaetodontidae. It is found in the north western Indian Ocean.
Chaetodon nigropunctatus has a whitish mouth set in a grey face, the colour of the body is greyish white and it is marked with many longitudinal rows of dark grey spots. The tail is black with a white margin.[4] The dorsal fin has 13 spines and 21-23 soft rays while the anal fin has 3 spines and 18-20 soft rays. This species attains a maximum total length of 14 centimetres (5.5 in).[3]
Chaetodon nigropunctatus is found in the northwestern Indian Ocean. It occurs in the Persian Gulf, Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea coast of the Arabian Peninsula.[1]
Chaetodon nigropunctatus occurs at depths between 1 and 40 metres (3.3 and 131.2 ft),[1] inhabiting coral reefs where they occur in pairs. They are thought to feed mainly on coral polyps.[3] it occurs over reefs, either of coral or rock, and sometime in Sandy lagoon areas.[1]
Chaetodon nigropunctatus was first formally described in 1880 by the French paleontologist, ichthyologist, and herpetologist Henri Émile Sauvage (1842-1917) with the type locality was given as Oman.[5] It belongs to the large subgenus Rabdophorus which might warrant recognition as a distinct genus.[6]
Chaetodon nigropunctatus is rare in the aquarium trade.[1] However, it is a difficult species to keep in captivity due to its specialised diet of live coral polyps.[4]

Posee la morfología típica de su familia, cuerpo ovalado y comprimido lateralmente, aunque su perfil lateral es más cuadrangular que la media del género.
La coloración base del cuerpo y de las aletas dorsal, anal y caudal es crema. Un patrón de líneas y puntos oscuros, conformando un dibujo de red, recubre el cuerpo. Las aletas pectorales son transparentes. Las aletas dorsal, anal y los laterales de la caudal, tienen un fino margen negro, y la aleta caudal tiene el margen posterior blanco. El hocico y la boca son blancos, y la raya negra de la cabeza que atraviesa el ojo, tan característica del género, la pierden de adultos.
Tiene 13 espinas dorsales, entre 21 y 23 radios blandos dorsales, 3 espinas anales, y entre 18 y 20 radios blandos anales.[5]
Alcanza los 14 cm de largo.[6]
Especie asociada a arrecifes superficiales, tanto rocosos como coralinos, también en lagunas con fondos de arena.[7] Normalmente se les ve en parejas o solitarios. Habitan en colonias coralinas, alimentándose durante el día y resguardándose bajo el coral por la noche.
Su rango de profundidad está entre 3 y 15 metros.[8]
Se distribuye exclusivamente en aguas tropicales del océano Índico oeste, en los golfos de Omán y Pérsico, y al sur de la península arábiga y el mar Rojo.[9] Es especie nativa de Arabia Saudí; Baréin; Emiratos Árabes Unidos; Irán; Irak; Kuwait; Omán y Qatar.[10]
Se alimenta predominantemente de pólipos de corales.[8]
Son dioicos, o de sexos separados, ovíparos, y de fertilización externa. El desove sucede antes del anochecer. Forman parejas durante la maduración para toda su vida, y durante el ciclo reproductivo, pero no protegen sus huevos y crías después del desove.[11]

Chaetodon nigropunctatus is een straalvinnige vissensoort uit de familie van koraalvlinders (Chaetodontidae).[2] De wetenschappelijke naam van de soort is voor het eerst geldig gepubliceerd in 1880 door Sauvage.
De soort staat op de Rode Lijst van de IUCN als niet bedreigd, beoordelingsjaar 2009. De omvang van de populatie is volgens de IUCN stabiel.[1]

Một dải màu đen mỏng hơn có pha màu cam nằm băng qua mắt. Vây lưng và vây hậu môn có đường viền màu đen; vây đuôi có một dải hẹp màu trắng; các vây đều có màu nâu. Cá con có màu sẫm hơn trưởng thành, đặc biệt chúng có một dải màu đen băng qua mắt và nắp mang, trở nên mờ đi khi cá con trưởng thành[3].
