Die Fische werden nur 6,5 Zentimeter lang und sind auffällig leuchtend rot gefärbt. Vier bis neun irisierende blaue Querstreifen erstrecken sich über Kopf und Körper. Sie sind auf dem Rücken schmaler. Die erste Rückenflosse ist hoch, besonders bei den Männchen.
Die Fische bewohnen felsige Böden und zeigen sich recht offen, ziehen sich bei Bedrohung aber in Felsspalten, Löcher oder zwischen den Stacheln von Seeigeln zurück. Sie sind revierbildend. Die Weibchen legen ihren Laich in leere Muschelschalen. Das Gelege wird anschließend vom Männchen bewacht. Blaustreifengrundel bevorzugen kühles Wasser von 15 bis 18 °C, halten sich nur im Winter im flachen Wasser auf und wandern im Sommer in mehr als 50 Meter Tiefe. Sie ernähren sich vor allem von kleinen Krebstieren. Oft sieht man sie zusammen mit der ähnlich gefärbten aber scheueren Lythrypnus zebra.

Tulitokko elää luonnossa meressä Meksikon ja Kalifornian lähivesillä, kallioisilla alueilla 0-76 metrin syvyydessä.[2]
Tulitokko on vilkas kala joka puikkelehtii kivenkoloissa. Se on parhaimmillaan pienenä parvena.[3] Se puolustaa reviiriään, ja tyypillisesti nöpöttää rintaeviensä varassa kalliopinnalla lähellä suojaisaa koloa, johon se voi vetäytyä vaaran uhatessa. Se voi hakea turvapaikkaa myös merisiilin piikkien välistä.[2]
Tulitokko syö monenlaista akvaarioruokaa, ja sitä tulisi ruokkia kahdesti päivässä. Luonnossa se elää 15–18 °C:n lämpötilassa, mutta pärjää akvaarion trooppisissa vesissä.[4]

Le gobie rouge à rayures bleues est appelé ainsi pour son corps rouge avec 2 à 6 bandes bleues verticales qui lui strient le corps: elles partent du museau jusqu'à la partie postérieure de l'abdomen. Sa nageoire dorsale est bipartie et leur bouche est protractile. Il atteint jusqu'à 5 cm de longueur.
On les rencontre dans les eaux du pacifique oriental, dans le golfe de Californie, sur les fonds rocheux, jusqu'à une soixantaine de mètres de profondeur et parfois même au-delà.
Carnivore. Le gobie rouge à rayures bleues acceptent de nombreuses variétés d'aliments, congelées, vivantes, lyophilisés.
Lythrypnus dalli doit être maintenu en aquarium marin d'eau refroidie à moins de 22 °C[1], et surtout pas en aquarium récifal tropical. Il est apprécié pour ses couleurs éclatantes, son comportement particulier et sa facilité de maintenance. Il lui faut un aquarium de 200 litres doté d'un décor rocheux et un substrat sablonneux, il sera maintenu seul ou en couple, mais idéalement en groupe de 6 à 8 poissons.
Réalisable en aquarium[2]. Il faut installer un couple dans des conditions optimales, c'est-à-dire une température d'environ 15 °C pour l'eau.

È diffuso lungo le acque della costa americana del Pacifico, dalla California al Messico. Abita le acque costiere rocciose, preferendo gli anfratti, tra 0 e -70 m.
Il corpo è allungato, piuttosto compresso ai fianchi. La testa è grossa, la bocca grande provvista di denti. Le pinne pettorali sono ampie e arrotondate. Possiede due pinne dorsali. La prima è alta e arrotondata, la seconda bassa e allungata. Le altre pinne sono corte. Il maschio presenta una pinna dorsale più ampia della femmina. La livrea è molto appariscente: il fondo è rosso vivo, la testa presenta una macchia azzurro elettrico, che sul dorso si allunga dando origine a 2 delle 4 linee verticali che attraversano i fianchi del pesce. Le pinne sono rossastre tendenti al trasparente.
Raggiunge una lunghezza massima di 6,4 cm.
Questo pesce è ermafrodita, presentando entrambi i caratteri sessuali, ma avendone sviluppato solo uno. La riproduzione avviene tra marzo ad agosto. Le uova sono deposte nelle pareti degli anfratti rocciosi. Il maschio monta la guardia fino alla schiusa.
Il gobide di Catalina è un pesce ricercato dagli acquariofili, in quanto le sue dimensioni contenute ne fanno un ottimo ospite dei Nano-Reef.

Lythrypnus dalli is een straalvinnige vissensoort uit de familie van grondels (Gobiidae).[2] De wetenschappelijke naam van de soort is voor het eerst geldig gepubliceerd in 1890 door Gilbert.
De soort staat op de Rode Lijst van de IUCN als niet bedreigd, beoordelingsjaar 2007. De omvang van de populatie is volgens de IUCN stabiel.[1]
