This species is distinguished by the following characters: body moderately deep, its depth 2.3-2.6 times in standard length; dorsal profile of head convex; anterior tip of snout forming an acute angle; jaws prominent, 2 strong canines situated anteriorly in each jaw; no enlarged tooth present of rear of upper jaw. D IX,10, the spines and anterior soft rays of similar length; A III,8; pectoral fins with ii unbranched and 10 branched rays; pelvic fins long, reaching anus in small fish, well beyond in adults; centre of caudal fin rounded in adults, with the upper and lower rays forming elongate lobes giving the fin a trilobed appearance; lateral line interrupted below posterior portion of dorsal-fin base, with a total of 22-23 pored scales; scales reaching well onto bases of dorsal and anal fins; scales in front of dorsal fin extending forward to above centre of eye; cheek and opercle scaly; lower jaw without scales. Colour of the body variably pigmented from green to brown with mottled purple and red markings; 4 vertical dark bars on body that are often indistinct on large individuals; head with numerous small red spots; red lines radiating from anterior and posterior of eye; scales on sides each with a vertical, slightly curved red line; dorsal, anal, and pectoral fins yellow or green with distal red streaks; caudal fin green with a red posterior margin; juveniles with 3-4 dark spots midlaterally on sides and more prominent dark bars. This species capable of rapid colour changes (Ref. 9823).

Adults inhabit lagoon and seaward reefs at depths of 1 to over 30 m, and relatively common along shallow reef margins with good coral cover (Ref. 9710). Usually solitary (Ref. 5213). Feed mainly on shelled benthic invertebrates such as mollusks and crustaceans, but occasionally take fishes (Ref. 1602). Oviparous, distinct pairing during breeding (Ref. 205). Difficult to approach (Ref. 9710). Juveniles secretive on algae reefs and usually around stinging hydrozoans (Ref. 48636).

Identifikasie
Die vis word tot 45 cm lank en beide geslagte het dieselfde kleurvariasies. Die vis het 'n dieplyf met die stertvin se stekels wat oënskynlik uit drie dele bestaan. Die middelste gedeelte van die stekels is langer. Die stertvin is olyf tot bruin van kleur en daar is verskeie kort, vertikale pienk strepe oor die lyf. Daar is ook twee wit bande oor die stertvinbasis. Die kop is bedek fyn, pienk kolletjies en spikkels. Die onvolwasse visse lyk baie soos die volwasse visse met ekstra witterige bande op die lyf en die stertvin is gerond.
Hulle leef in rotsagtige kusareas en aflandige rotsriwwe in water wat 1 tot 140 m diep is. Die vis is 'n alleenloper en vreet klein vissies, skaaldiere en slakke.

It has a moderately deep body with a tri-lobed tail. Its body is green to brown with molted purple and red markings.there are 4 vertical dark stripes on its body. Its head has red spots and red lines radiating from its eye.[2]
Habitat
It lives in lagoons and seaward reefs at depths of 1–30 metres (3 ft 3 in – 98 ft 5 in).[2]
Diet
It eats shelled benthic invertebrates such as mollusks and crustaceans, but sometimes fish.[2]

Hábitat

Distribución geográfica
Océanos Índico y Pacífico: se encuentra desde África Oriental hasta las Tuamotu, por el norte hasta las islas Ryukyu y por el sur hasta Nueva Caledonia.

Cheilinus trilobatus Lacépède, 1801 è un pesce marino appartenente alla famiglia Labridae che vive nelle zone tropicali dell'Indo-Pacifico.
Distribuzione e habitat
Proviene dalle barriere coralline dell'oceano Pacifico, dell'oceano Indiano e del Mar Rosso, soprattutto dalle Isole Ryukyu, Tuamotu, Nuova Caledonia, Isole Australi[2], Riunione, Mauritius, Aldabra, Seychelles, Chagos e dalle coste dell'Africa orientale, in particolare da Mozambico, Somalia, Gibuti, Sudafrica e Kenya[3]. Nuota a circa 30 m di profondità in zone ricche di coralli o, più raramente, di vegetazione acquatica[1].
Descrizione
Presenta un corpo leggermente compresso lateralmente, con la testa dal profilo appuntito, con la pinna dorsale e la pinna anale basse ma allungate. La colorazione è grigia o marrone, a volte verdastra negli esemplari più giovani, con diverse aree bianche sul dorso e sulla pinna dorsale. Sulla testa ci sono diverse piccole strisce irregolari rosse, mentre un disegno più regolare rosso è verde è presente su quasi tutto il corpo. Sul peduncolo e la pinna caudale possono essere presenti delle fasce bianche. Le pinne hanno spesso il bordo rosso, la pinna caudale nei maschi adulti è divisa in tre lobi, con i raggi esterni più allungati. La lunghezza massima registrata è di 45 cm[2]. Somiglia abbastanza a C. chlorourus.
Biologia
Comportamento
È una specie prevalentemente solitaria, difficile da osservare anche se non particolarmente rara. Spesso gli esemplari giovani si nascondono tra i tentacoli di alcuni idrozoi[1].
Alimentazione
La sua dieta, prevalentemente carnivora, è composta sia da uova di pesci e pesci ossei più piccoli che soprattutto da varie specie di invertebrati acquatici come crostacei, in particolare granchi, Galatheidae e gamberi, echinodermi, sia ofiure che ricci di mare e molluschi gasteropodi e chitoni[4].
Riproduzione
È un pesce oviparo e la fecondazione è esterna[5]. Non vi sono cure verso uova e avannotti.
Conservazione
Questa specie viene classificata come "a rischio minimo" (LC) dalla lista rossa IUCN perché non viene pescata molto frequentemente ed è diffusa in diverse aree protette[1].
