體呈卵圓形，中等側扁。頭部具黏液囊，外露骨骼多有脊紋；鼻骨間的凹溝菱形。眼大。口端位，裂斜；主上頜骨長未端達眼後緣；頜骨、鋤骨及腭骨均有絨毛狀群齒。前鰓蓋骨後下角及下眼眶骨均無棘；鰓蓋骨後緣成顯著的鋸齒狀。頭部被細鱗，體被中型粗櫛鱗，後緣具小棘；側線完全，側線鱗數32-42，側線至背鰭硬棘中間點之鱗片數4.5。鰓耙數7-8+14-15=22-23。背鰭連續，單一，硬棘部及軟條部間具深凹，具硬棘XII，軟條15；最後一棘不長於前一棘。臀鰭有硬棘

17；尾鰭深叉形。體呈均勻的鮮紅色。
