Escal appendage pattern C; esca with a large complex anterior appendage consisting of a wide compressed base bearing a relatively short unpaired branched filament on posterior margin, two extremely long distal filaments (about 16.3–17.3% SL) that bifurcate as many as five times, and a stout bifurcated medial filament each branch of which becomes highly branched distally; a pair of filamentous highly branched medial escal appendages less than length of escal bulb; terminal escal papilla with a single distal streak of pigment; a slender unbranched posterior escal appendage less than length of escal bulb; a relatively short filamentous branched anterolateral appendage on each side.
Subopercle long and narrow, dorsal end tapering, rounded or pointed distally, without indentation on posterodorsal margin; length of ventral fork of opercle 26.6–27.7% SL; ratio of length of dorsal and ventral forks of opercle 0.47–0.51.
Epibranchial teeth absent; teeth present on pharyngobranchial II; total number of teeth in upper jaw 60–67, in lower jaw 56–76; number of teeth on vomer 5 or 6; dorsal-fin rays 5 or 6; anal-fin rays 4; pectoral-fin rays 15–17.
Measurements in percent of standard length: head length 43.8–47.7; head depth 42.4–50.0; premaxilla length 35.9–40.0; lower jaw length 50.0–52.7; illicium length 37.5–107.7.
Oneirodes schmidti is a member of the O. schmidti-group. In addition to differences in escal morphology, O. schmidti differs from most other members of the O. schmidti-group by having a greater number of teeth in the jaws.
Oneirodes schmidti is known only from the Banda Sea. The holotype was captured in an open trawl fished with 3500 m of wire. The 65- and 92-mm specimens were captured between the surface and 760 m; the 78-mm specimen between the surface and 2000 m. The 15.5-mm specimen was captured in an opening-closing trawl between 650–810 m.
Meso-to bathypelagic.

Although unknown, males of O. schmidti are certainly free-living and presumed non-parasitic, as is the case with most taxa of the family Oneirodidae.
Known from five metamorphosed females (15.5–92 mm).
