The yellow-footed honeyguide (Melignomon eisentrauti) is a species of bird in the family Indicatoridae. It is found in Cameroon, Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Ivory Coast, Ghana and Nigeria. Its natural habitat is subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests. It is threatened by loss of its forest habitat.

Description

This small, unobtrusive bird grows to a length of about 18 cm (7 in).^[1] The sexes are similar in this species but females are slightly smaller than males. The head and upper parts are olive green, with the back rather yellower than the head. The flight feathers of the wings and the two central feathers of the tail are brownish-black, as are the bases of the outer four pairs of feathers, the remainder being white, with dark tips. The chin, throat, breast and front of the belly are pale grey, while the rear belly and the under-tail coverts are pure white. The beak is yellowish, the orbital ring greenish-yellow and the iris brown. The legs and feet are yellow.^[2] The voice is a sequence of about a dozen clear notes, each rising in pitch, the whole series gradually slowing and descending.^[1]

Distribution

The yellow-footed honeyguide is native to tropical West Africa where it has been recorded in Sierra Leone, Liberia, Guinea, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Nigeria and Cameroon. It is known from lowland forest at altitudes of up to 750 m (2,500 ft).^[1]

Ecology

This bird feeds on insects, fruits and seeds, and probably on beeswax as evidenced by a waxy yellow material being found among the stomach contents. Little is known of its breeding behaviour.^[3]

Conservation status

The yellow-footed honeyguide occupies a total area of around 485,000 km² (187,000 sq mi) and is described as being rare, although this may be because it is an unobtrusive bird. It is threatened by habitat destruction, as the forests where it is found are being degraded or cleared, but it is tolerant of some degree of habitat disturbance. For these reasons, the International Union for Conservation of Nature suspects that its population is slowly declining and has assessed the species as having a "near threatened" conservation status.^[4]

El indicador patiamarillo (Melignomon eisentrauti)^[2]​^[3]​ es una especie de ave piciforme de la familia Indicatoridae que habita en África Occidental.

Se alimenta principalmente de polen, insectos, semillas y frutos pequeños.^[4]​

Distribución y hábitat

Se la encuentra en Camerún, Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leona, posiblemente en Costa de Marfil, y posiblemente en Ghana. Su hábitat natural son los bosques húmedos bajos tropicales. Se encuentra amenazada por la pérdida de hábitat.

Miodziarz żółtostopy (Melignomon eisentrauti) – gatunek małego ptaka z rodziny miodowodów. Występuje w zachodnio-centralnej Afryce. Ma status niedostateczne dane.

Taksonomia

Po raz pierwszy gatunek opisał Michel Louette w 1981 na łamach Revue de zoologie africaine^[3]. Holotyp pochodził z północno-wschodniej Liberii z hrabstwa Nimba. Była to dorosła samica, odłowiona 15 marca 1980^[4]. Autor nadał nowemu gatunkowi nazwę Melignomon eisentrauti^[3]. Obecnie (2016) Międzynarodowy Komitet Ornitologiczny podtrzymuje tę nazwę^[5]. Holotyp znajduje się w Królewskim Muzeum Afryki Środkowej w Tervuren^[4]. Miodziarz żółtostopy jest gatunkiem monotypowym^[5][6].

Morfologia

Długość ciała wynosi około 14,5 cm^[6] (według innego źródła 18 cm^[7]); masa ciała samców wynosi 21–29 g, samic 18–25 g^[6]. W upierzeniu nie występuje dymorfizm płciowy, samice są jedynie mniejsze od samców. Ciemię i kark oliwkowozielone, w środku bardziej szarawe, podobnie jak po bokach głowy i na szyi. Grzbiet i pokrywy nadogonowe bardziej żółtawe w stosunku do ciemienia, żółtozielone lub zielone. Dwie środkowe sterówki i nasady pozostałych 4 par brązowoczarne, końcówki owych 4 pozostałych par popielate, pozostała część sterówek głównie biała. Broda jasnoszara, gardło, pierś brzuch i boki ciała jasnoszare z żółtozielonym nalotem. Pokrywy podogonowe białe, kremowe; po bokach ciała widoczne oliwkowe pasy. Pokrywy skrzydłowe zdobią szerokie, żółtozielone krawędzie, lotki brązowoczarne z żółtymi krawędziami zewnętrznymi. Dziób żółto, żółtooliwkowy lub żółtobrązowy, kąciki dzioba żółte. Tęczówka brązowa. Stopy od jasnożółtych po żółtobrązowe^[8].

Zasięg występowania

Miodziarze żółtostope odnotowano w Kamerunie (dwa stwierdzenia), w Liberii, Sierra Leone (w Gola Forest), na Wybrzeżu Kości Słoniowej, w Ghanie i Nigerii. Najpewniej przedstawiciele gatunku występują na innych obszarach Afryki Zachodniej, ale są przeoczane przy okazji badań terenowych^[7].

Ekologia

Miodziarze żółtostope występują w lasach z częścią drzew zrzucającą liście oraz w pierwotnych lasach wiecznie zielonych na nizinach; najprawdopodobniej dobrze sobie radzą także w lasach wtórnych. Żywią się owadami, pyłkiem, niewielkimi owocami i nasionami^[7]. Na podstawie badań okazów ustalono, że w Liberii okres lęgowy trwa w marcu, a w Kamerunie przynajmniej w sierpniu i grudniu^[6]. Najprawdopodobniej są pasożytami lęgowymi, nie są jednak znani gospodarze. Obserwowano jednak, jak miodziarza przegania nikornik ciemny (Apalis sharpii), możliwe więc, że ptaki tego gatunku są gospodarzami^[7].

Status

IUCN nadaje miodziarzowi żółtostopemu rangę niedostateczne dane (DD, Data Deficient) od 2000 roku (stan w 2016); wcześniej, w latach 1994 i 1996, otrzymał status narażonego. Jest to gatunek bardzo słabo poznany. Odnotowany w trzech parkach narodowych – Marahoué (Wybrzeże Kości Słoniowej), Okomu i Cross River (Nigeria) oraz kilku rezerwatach. Środowisko naturalne w obrębie zasięgu tych miodowodów pozostaje niszczone przez człowieka poprzez wycinkę, rozwój rolnictwa i górnictwa. W połączeniu z niepewnością co do stopnia zależności tych ptaków od pierwotnych lasów nie jest możliwe stwierdzenie, czy liczebność populacji spada wskutek niszczenia środowiska^[7].
