Der Fischerturako erreicht eine Körperlänge von 40 cm und ein Gewicht von 227 bis 283 g. Sein Gefieder ist überwiegend glänzend grünblau[1], die Schwanzfedern dunkel blaugrün.[2] Das Rot der Federhaube erstreckt sich bis in den Nacken. Zum Rand hin ist sie düster rot und am Rand dünn weiß, an der höchsten Stelle schwarz gesäumt.[3] Über und unter dem roten Orbitalring befindet sich ein weißer Streif. Der Schnabel ist rot.[2]
Tauraco fischeri bewohnt Küsten- und Flusswälder in Kenya, im nordöstlichen Tanzania und im südlichen Somalia. Die Unterart Tauraco fischeri zanzibaricus ist ein Endemit Sansibars.[1]
Der Fischerturako ist in seinem gesamten Verbreitungsgebiet ein Standvogel. Das fragile Nest wird als Plattform aus lockeren Zweigen in 3 bis 10 m Höhe über dem Boden in dichtem Laubwerk gebaut.[3] Das Gelege besteht aus 2 Eiern, die Brutdauer beträgt 22 bis 23 Tage.[1]
Anton Reichenow beschrieb den Fischerturako unter dem Namen Corythaix Fischeri. Das Typusexemplar stammte aus Witu und wurde von Gustav Adolf Fischer (1848–1886) entdeckt.[4] Schon 1779 führte Jan Krzysztof Kluk (1739–1796) die neue Gattung Tauraco für den Guineaturako (Tauraco persa (Linnaeus, 1758)) ein, der erst später auch der Fischerturako zugewiesen wurde.[5] Dieser Name basiert wahrscheinlich auf einem Namen den die westafrikanischen Eingeborenen verwendeten.[6] Der Artnamen ehrt den Entdecker des Typusexemplars.[4] Zanzibaricus bezieht sich auf ‚Sansibar‘. Richard Hercules Wingfield Pakenham (1906–1993) gab den Jozani Chwaka Bay Nationalpark auf Sansibar als Verbreitungsgebiet an.[7]

These green bodied turacos have a white-tipped reddish crest, a black belly, and red primaries. They also feature green-blue wings and a dark blue-green tail.[6]
The red skin around their eyes is margined in front by a white line that extends to its bright red bill, and below by a small black patch also boarded by a white line that extends to below its ear-covets.[7] Their white eye stripes and red orbital skin help to distinguish them from the more common Red-crested turaco.[3]
The song of the Fischer's turaco is described as a series of loud growls where the rising notes commence slowly and progress as a series of up to 12 identical notes.[6]
The Fischer's turaco inhabits coastal and riverine forest and woodland in Coastal East Africa, specifically in Kenya, north-eastern Tanzania, and southern Somalia. This species lives in forest thickets, but does favor the canopy and sub-canopy of mature fruiting trees.[8] They are common in their limited range, but are more often heard than seen because they travel alone or in pairs, which makes them hard to spot.[3]
This bird eats mainly fruits (especially figs and berries), but also eats flower buds, young leaf shoots, and insects.[5]
The population of Fischer's turacos is decreasing, with the current number of mature individuals estimated to be 1,500 - 7,000.[8] This species is currently protected by the United Nations' Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITIES) Appendix II. In Somalia, Notification to the Parties No. 2004/055 was enacted in 2019, which suspended all commercial trade of the species.[9]
Once bonded, the Fischer's turaco makes a loose, platform stick nest in the tree canopy. Both males and females help build the nest and incubate the eggs. A typical clutch consists of 2 white eggs that feature an incubation period of 22–23 days. Chicks fledge from the nest between 4–5 weeks, but are not able to fly until about 6 weeks of age.[3]

Mide sobre 40 cm y de largo y su peso oscila entre 230 y 280 g. Presenta un plumaje brillante en tonos verdes sobre la cara y el pecho que se van tornando en tonos más oscuros de verde o incluso azulados en el resto del cuerpo y las alas. En la parte interior de las alas posee unas llamativas plumas rojas que sólo son visibles cuando el animal las despliega. Su rasco más característico es la cresta carmesí que tiene sobre la cabeza y la nuca. Este cresta está ribeteada de negro en la parte anterior y de blanco en la posterior, lo que ayuda a distinguirla de especies similares. Enmarcando al ojo tiene dos líneas blancas, separadas en el lagrimal por una mancha oscura, que recorren el contorno del ojo siendo la inferior más larga que la superior. Tiene un pico curvado y unos ojos anaranjados. No existe dimorfismo sexual.

Es una especie principalmente arbórea que solo baja al suelo para beber y alimentarse. Pasa la mayor parte del tiempo en la parte superior de los árboles donde se desplaza de rama en rama saltando o con vuelos cortos. Suele vivir en parejas o grupos pequeños. Pasan la mayor parte del día alimentándose con pequeños intervalos de descanso o para tomar el sol. Al anochecer volverá a su sitio preferido para posarse. El turaco de Fischer se alimenta principalmente de frutas, en particular higos y bayas, aunque también come brotes, hojas, flores e insectos. Su nido es una plataforma frágil de ramitas colocadas en un árbol a 3-10 m sobre el suelo. Su época de reproducción comienza con la estación de lluvias. La hembra pondrá dos huevos y el período de incubación es de 22-23 días que será realizada por ambos progenitores. Cuando los polluelos nazcan también se encargaran de su cuidado padre y madre.
Esta especie se clasifica como Amenazada por la UICN debido a que se cree que la población es moderadamente pequeña y la tendencia es decreciente debido a la degradación de su hábitat por la explotación del bosque, la tala para proporcionar tierras de labranza y el comercio ilegal de especies. Se estima que la población total está entre 1.500 y 7.000 ejemplares.

De vogel werd in 1878 door Anton Reichenow beschreven en als eerbetoon naar de Duitse ontdekkingsreiziger Gustav Fischer vernoemd die de vogel had verzameld in Afrika.[2] Het is een voor uitsterven gevoelige vogelsoort in oostelijk Afrika.
De vogel is gemiddeld 40 cm lang. Het is een van de groen gekleurde soorten toerako's waarvan het verenkleed grotendeels glanzend blauwgroen is. Kenmerkend voor deze soort is de combinatie van een rode kuif die achter doorloopt tot op de nek en de witte rand om het oog. Dit wit omsluit een zwarte vlek bij het oog en het wit loopt uit als een korte oogstreep.[1]
Deze soort komt voor in Oost-Afrika en telt twee ondersoorten:
Het leefgebied bestaat uit bosrijk gebied. Hoewel de vogel wordt aangetroffen in zwaar gedegradeerd bos, is de voorkeurshabitat natuurlijk tropisch bos met vruchtdragende bomen. In ieder geval is de aanwezigheid binnen het leefgebied van grote bomen een belangrijke voorwaarde.[1]
Fischers toerako heeft een beperkt verspreidingsgebied en daardoor is de kans op uitsterven aanwezig. De grootte van de populatie werd in 2016 door BirdLife International geschat op 1,5 tot 7 duizend individuen en de populatie-aantallen nemen af. De vangst en handel in deze vogelsoort is een van de grootste bedreigingen. Daarnaast is er, vooral op Zanzibar sprake van habitatverlies door ontbossingen. Om deze redenen staat deze soort als gevoelig op de Rode Lijst van de IUCN.[1]
Toerako's worden vaak gehouden in vogelcollecties. Er gelden officieel beperkingen voor de handel in deze vogel, want de soort staat in de Bijlage II van het CITES-verdrag.[1] ZOO Antwerpen in België is stamboekhouder van de soort.

W barwie piór, podobnie jak u większości gatunków z rodzaju Tauraco przeważają barwy zielona i niebieska. Od podobnych mu gatunków wyróżnia go jednak czerwona barwa czuba, zwieńczonego fioletowym lub czarnym cieniem i białą kreską z tyłu głowy. Czerwień czuba jest przedłużona na szyi i opada aż na kark. Reszta głowy i szyi oraz pierś jest jasnozielona. Pod okiem otoczonym nagą, czerwoną skórą znajdują się charakterystyczne dla tych turaków dwie białe i jedna czarna kreska. Dziób jest barwy różowo-czerwonej. Im dalej od głowy, tym pióra stają się bardziej niebieskie, by na ogonie przybrać kolor intensywnie granatowy. lotki są czerwone, choć prawie niewidoczne w stanie spoczynku, za to bardzo wyraźnie podczas lotu[6].
