The genus is unique in possessing forked middle radials of the ultimate dorsal- and anal-fin pterygiophores, no pleural ribs or only a single pleural rib on the ultimate precaudal vertebra, and caducous, cutaneous, short barbel-like processes scattered on the head. Two species that had been referred to the genus Taenioides (T. jacksoni and T. limicola) are now placed in the synonymy of Trypauchenopsis intermedia.

In the following description of dorsal-, anal- and pectoral-fin ray counts, frequency of each count is enclosed by parentheses, and of the count of the holotype is denoted by an asterisk. Dorsal-fin spines V (1), VI* (96) or VII (1); dorsal-fin segmented rays 28 (4), 29 (16), 30 (9), 31 (10), 32* (25), 33 (20), 34 (13) or 35 (1); no anal-fin spines; anal-fin segmented rays 27 (8), 28 (17), 29 (13), 30* (24), 31 (25), 32 (6) or 33 (3); pectoral-fin rays (left side) 16* (6), 17 (23), 18 (7) or 19 (2), pectoral-fin rays (right side) 16 (6), 17* (22), 18 (7) or 19 (3); pelvic-fin rays I, 5; segmented caudal-fin rays 9+8, including 8+7 branched rays; dorsal and ventral unsegmented rays (anteriormost appear as ossified nubbins) 2-5 and 2-5, respectively; gill rakers 2-4+6-9=9-12; no pseudobranchial filaments (but a row of papilla-like cutaneous projections visible on inner surface of gill cover; see below). Body greatly elongated, subcylindrical, slightly compressed posteriorly. Head subcylindrical or slightly depressed, head depth 81.2-97.0 % of head width. Eye rudimentary but distinct, covered by skin, its diameter subequal or slightly smaller than cleft of posterior narial opening; eye diameter 2.7-4.8 % of head length. Posterior narial opening narrow, nearly cleft-like, located immediately anterolateral to eye; anterior narial opening at tip of short tube that slightly overhangs upper jaw; internarial distance of posterior nares subequal to that of anterior nares, and slightly greater than interorbital width. Gape wide, mouth terminal, slightly oblique, forming an angle of 30 degrees with body axis; maxilla almost extending posteriorly to a vertical line through anterior half of eye; posteriorly, near tip of maxilla, upper lip expanded into large fold that joins similar fold of lower lip at rictus, fold completely covers posterior part of jaws; posteroventral margin of lower lip broadly interrupted at lower-jaw symphysis. Mental frenum absent. Tongue thick, tip rounded, slightly free from floor of mouth. Gill opening narrow, extending only the length of pectoral-fin base or slightly more ventrally. No fleshy projections on lateral wing of shoulder girdle. First and second dorsal fins connected by membrane without distinct notch between them; all elements of second dorsal and fins segmented and branched; all dorsal- and anal-fin spines flexible; anal-fin height approximately equal to second dorsal-fin height; dorsal and anal fins broadly joined with caudal fin by membrane, without distinct notch between them. Pectoral fin rounded posteriorly, shorter than pelvic fin (52.8-75.3 % of pelvic fin in length); nearly all pectoral-fin rays branched (occasionally uppermost and/or lowermost rays simple), finely segmented; no free rays on pectoral fin; interradial membrane of pectoral fin deeply incised (Fig. 3). Pelvic fin short (62.4-86.6 % of head length), its posterior end well-separated from anus when appressed; all pelvic-fin rays branched and finely segmented, fifth ray longest; pelvic frenum well developed with smooth and slightly concave posterior margin; basal membrane uniting fins present throughout length of innermost ray; anterior half or more of pelvic fins adhering to belly by membrane medially. Caudal fin lanceolate, long, twice or more than head in length. Gill rakers short and blunt, not supporting ossified rakers. Pseudobranchial filaments undeveloped. Single row of minute fleshy papilla-like processes fringing dorsally along dorsal edge of ceratohyals and inner surface of interhyal. Scales absent on body. In most specimens, three rows of teeth in each jaw, outer row teeth conical and slender, inner row similar in shape to outer row but smaller. Teeth do not protrude beyond lips. No stout caninoid teeth internal to symphysis of lower jaw. No palatine or vomerine teeth present. Cephalic sensory canals and pores absent. Each sensory papilla concealed by short, fleshy barbel-like process described above; sensory papillae evident when the barbel-like processes are shed. Sensory papillae rows also present on body and caudal fin, with each sensory papilla also concealed by barbel-like process, as on head.

Like many other eel gobies, Trypauchenopsis intermedia is a mud-burrowing, estuarine goby. We have collected this species in the Ryukyu Islands from a shallow pool with soft muddy bottom or, occasionally, within an exposed mud flat in a mangrove lagoon at low tide; in addition to Trypauchenopsis, several estuarine gobies, e.g., Acentrogobius spp. (e.g., A. suluensis), Cristatogobius lophius, Oxyurichthys spp. (e.g., O. ophthalmonema and O. visayanus) and Caragobius urolepis, were typically collected at the same time.
