This is the progenitor of the edible carrot (Daucus carota). In winter time one can eat the root which is whitish and not orange. the seeds are envelopeed in the inflorescence (see picture) all summer time and the structure opens in the first heavy November rains. This is how the seeds are protected from predation of birds and insects.
This is the wild progenitor of the garden carrot. It is perennial and has a white carrot-like root that is eddible in wintertime. These are the dry inflorescences during seed dispersal, the spiny seeds are attached to fur (and socks).
