Pinon Pine's are one of my favorite trees. "Focus the viewer's attention. Make a photo of a single subject with as plain a background as you can." @dailyshoot #ds191

2011-02-05 Lower Austria, district Bruck/Leitha - Hundsheimer Berge (335 m AMSL).The extreme conditions of rocky Braunsberg heath created this dwarfism - usually, Scots Pine is a huge tree, but here in this dry, rocky and extremely windy place it does not grow bigger than an ordinary Pinus mugo - and this at such low altitude (only ~335 metres AMSL!).German name: Rot-Fhre

2010.04.09 Lower Austria, district Neunkirchen, Rax northern flank/Wachthttlkamm (~1060 m AMSL).Habitus shot of a rather young tree, but yet the "layer"- or "storey-like" structure of twigs is obvious, and the peak is stump. Also, even at this distance the long needles clearly are noticeable.Note that Larix decidua (right hand side of the photo) is not growing straight upwards, as you can easily check when looking at that small Picea abies just to its left which grows straight towards the sky.German name: Schwarz-Fhre

The two green objects, a little below the center, are 2006 female pine cones. (There are a couple more of them) If all goes well, they will be pollinated, grow larger in 2007, and, in 2008, expand, dry, and open, so that the seeds can escape.More detail visible with larger sizes. We're traveling, so probably won't be able to upload much, or look at your photos as much as they deserve, for a week or so.A commenter pointed out that the plant is scrub pine (Pinus virginiana).Isn't God a great artist?
