Juveniles occur inshore and usually form small groups in estuarine seagrass beds. Adults can be found in inner as well as outer reefs and are territorial (Ref. 48636).

This species is distinguished by the following characters: body deep, its depth 2.4-2.7 times in standard length; dorsal profile of head convexly curved above eyes; anterior tip of head forming a broad angle with snout steeply inclined; jaws prominent; 4 strong canines situated anteriorly in each jaw with second pair in lower jaw directed laterally; an enlarged canine present on each side at rear of upper jaw; D XIII,7, continuous with spines and anterior soft rays of similar length; A III,9; pectoral fins with ii unbranched and 13-14 branched rays; pelvic fins not filamentous; caudal fin truncate to slightly rounded; lateral line continuous, smoothly curved, with 29 pored scales; scales barely reaching onto bases of dorsal and anal fins; scales in front of dorsal fin distinctly not extending forward to above eye; cheek and opercle scaly, scales on preopercle small, less than 1/4 the size of those on body; lower jaw without scales. Colour of body greenish to grey with underside of head, chest and lower portion of sides white or bluish; a wedge-shaped white band extending upward onto back behind pectoral fins; a large rectangular white saddle situated dorsally on caudal peduncle extending forward below rear of dorsal fin; head speckled with orange; pectoral-fin base covered by a large blue to black spot; dorsal fin greenish grey anteriorly and yellowish posteriorly; caudal fin greenish orange; anal fin yellow with orange markings; a narrow blue margin on dorsal and anal fins. The orange-dotted tuskfish (Choerodon anchorago) is a species of wrasse native to the Indian Ocean from Sri Lanka eastward to French Polynesia in the western Pacific. Its range extends north to the Ryukyus and south to New Caledonia. It inhabits reefs at depths from 1 to 25 m (3.3–82.0 ft). This species can reach a length of 50 cm (20 in). It is commercially important, and can be found in the aquarium trade.[2]
Along with blackspot tuskfish and a few other wrasse species, orange-dotted tuskfish have been observed taking small bivalves into the mouth and smashing them against a rock, a form of tool use by animals.[3][4][5]

Los machos pueden llegar alcanzar los 38 cm de longitud estándar (sin incluir la aleta caudal).[2]
Hábitat
Arrecifes tropicales; en profundidades de hasta 25 m.[2]
Distribución geográfica
Océanos Índico y Pacífico: se encuentra desde Sri Lanka hasta la Polinesia Francesa, por el norte hasta las islas Ryukyu y por el sur hasta Nueva Caledonia.

Choerodon anchorago (Bloch, 1791) è un pesce d'acqua salata appartenente alla famiglia Labridae[2].
Distribuzione e habitat
Proviene dalle barriere coralline dell'oceano Pacifico e dell'oceano Indiano; è stato localizzato dalle Isole Ryukyu, in Sri Lanka, Nuova Caledonia e Polinesia Francese[3]. Nuota a profondità basse, vicino alla superficie, sempre tra 1 e 25 m, di solito in aree ricche di vegetazione acquatica, a volte con fondo sabbioso[1]. Gli esemplari più giovani a volte nuotano negli estuari dei fiumi.
Descrizione
Presenta un corpo leggermente compresso lateralmente, non particolarmente allungato, con la testa dal profilo arrotondato tipico delle specie del genere Choerodon, che fa apparire il pesce tozzo.
La colorazione non varia durante la vita del pesce. Il corpo è prevalentemente grigio o marrone, con la testa più scura e una fascia gialla pallida verticale circa a metà del corpo. Le pinne sono gialle od arancioni, eccetto gran parte della pinna dorsale, che è marrone. Il ventre è bianco, la pinna caudale non è biforcuta, mentre sul peduncolo caudale è presente un'area più chiara a forma di sella. La lunghezza massima registrata è di 50 cm[3].
Biologia
Comportamento
Gli esemplari giovanili nuotano di solito in piccoli banchi, mentre gli adulti tendono ad essere territoriali ma formano aggregazioni nel periodo riproduttivo[1].
Alimentazione
La sua dieta, prevalentemente carnivora, è composta soprattutto da varie specie di invertebrati acquatici, come crostacei, in particolare anfipodi, granchi e isopodi; molluschi bivalvi e gasteropodi; ricci di mare e vermi, soprattutto policheti[4]. A volte si nutre anche di pesci ossei più piccoli[5].
Riproduzione
È oviparo e la fecondazione è esterna; non ci sono cure nei confronti delle uova[6], che gli adulti depongono in gruppo tra gennaio e marzo[1].
Conservazione
Questa specie non è particolarmente a rischio di estinzione e viene classificata come "a rischio minimo" dalla lista rossa IUCN perché è diffusa in alcune aree marine protette e perché la pesca, abbastanza frequente, è stata regolamentata[1].

Vissen Choerodon anchorago is een straalvinnige vissensoort uit de familie van lipvissen (Labridae).[2] De wetenschappelijke naam van de soort is voor het eerst geldig gepubliceerd in 1791 door Bloch.
De soort staat op de Rode Lijst van de IUCN als niet bedreigd, beoordelingsjaar 2008.[1]
