Body slightly compressed. The head is small; eyes large, diameter greater than snout length. Color is yellow-fawn, with irregular oblique brown blotches on the sides. The operculum is silver-black; anus and gill cavity black; belly stippled black; caudal fin base and inner ventral fin rays black.

Found on the continental shelf and upper slope over mud and clay bottom. Catch data indicate a schooling habit. Feeds mainly on bottom-living invertebrates. Also known to feed on pelagic crustaceans like euphausiids, decapods and mysids (Ref. 27637). A hermaphroditic species. Marketed fresh and sometimes made into fishmeal (Ref. 6688). Young are pelagic, living near the surface, the adults are demersal, living between 50 and 1000 m depth (Ref. 47377).

L'ullverd (Chlorophthalmus agassizi) és una espècie de peix pertanyent a la família Chlorophthalmidae.[4]

Descripció

  • Pot assolir els 40 cm de llargària màxima, tot i que, normalment, només en fa 20.
  • Cos lleugerament comprimit i de color groc a marró, amb taques més fosques.
  • Cap petit i deprimit.
  • Musell ample.
  • Ulls grossos i verdosos.
  • Dents molt petites i còniques.
  • Té taques irregulars obliqües de color marró en els costats.
  • L'opercle és de color negre argentat.
  • La base de l'aleta caudal és negra.
  • Les aletes pèlviques s'insereixen just al darrere de l'origen de l'aleta dorsal.
  • Aleta caudal molt bifurcada.
  • Nombre de vèrtebres: 46-48.[5][6][7][8]

Reproducció

És hermafrodita.[7]

Alimentació

Menja principalment invertebrats bentònics i, també, crustacis pelàgics (com ara, decàpodes, eufausiacis i Mysidacea).[9][7]

Depredadors

És depredat pel lluç europeu (Merluccius merluccius), Malacocephalus occidentalis (al Brasil), el lluç argentat d'altura (Merluccius albidus) (als Estats Units), Merluccius paradoxus (a Sud-àfrica) i Merluccius capensis (a Sud-àfrica).[10][11][12][13][14]

Hàbitat

Viu a la plataforma continental entre 50 i 1.000 m de fondària i sobre fons fangosos.[15]

Ús comercial

L’occhiverdi[1] o occhi verdi (Chlorophthalmus agassizi Bonaparte 1840) è un pesce di mare, unico rappresentante europeo della famiglia Chlorophthalmidae.

Distribuzione ed habitat

È presente e comune nel mar Mediterraneo compresi i mari italiani e si trova anche nell'Oceano Atlantico sia orientale (dal golfo di Guascogna alle Isole di Capo Verde) che occidentale (dal Massachusetts alla Guyana).
Vive a profondità notevoli, tra i 200 ed i 700 metri di profondità (in Atlantico fino a 1400 metri) su fondi fangosi.

Descrizione

La caratteristica più evidente di questo pesce sono gli occhi, grandi, di colore verde smeraldo e con pupilla ovale. Il corpo è slanciato, la testa è grande ed appiattita, con la mandibola prominente. La prima pinna dorsale è corta ed alta, le pinne pettorali ampie e la pinna caudale biloba.
Il colore è bronzeo con fasce scure, il ventre è bianco con puntini neri. La zona attorno all'ano è nera ed ospita un fotoforo.

Alimentazione

È carnivoro, si nutre di invertebrati, soprattutto crostacei eufausiacei.

Riproduzione

Estiva, uova e larve sono pelagiche.

Biologia

È gregario e passa il suo tempo cacciando in agguato sul fondo.

Pesca

Si cattura in quantità con le reti a strascico di profondità, ma il suo valore è modesto e finisce tra la minutaglia mista per fritture di paranza.

Found on the continental shelf and upper slope over mud and clay bottom. Temperature range is from 13°C to 4.5°C. Catch data indicate a schooling habit. Feeds mainly on bottom-living invertebrates. A hermaphroditic species. Marketed fresh and sometimes made into fish meal (Ref. 6688).
