Salvadora hexalepis, the western patch-nosed snake, is a species of non-venomous colubrid snake, which is endemic to the southwestern United States and northern Mexico.[5]

Geographic range

It is found in the southwestern United States in the states of Arizona, southern California, Nevada, southern New Mexico, and southwestern Texas. It is also found in northern Mexico in the Mexican states of Baja California, Baja California Sur, Chihuahua, Sinaloa, and Sonora.[2]

Subspecies

The following four subspecies are recognized:[2]

Description

At the end of the video, the snake feels threatened and strikes.

Adults of Salvadora hexalepis are, on average, 20-46 inches (51–117 cm) in total length;[6] the record total length is 58 in (150 cm).[7]

They have a distinctive, thick scale curved back over the top of the snout, and free at the edges.[7]

All subspecies are yellowish with blackish lateral stripes in various arrangements.[8]

The dorsal scales are smooth, and the anal plate is divided.[7]

Behavior

The western patch-nosed snake inhabits arid deserts in its area. It feeds upon lizards, snakes, reptile eggs, and small rodents.[9]

Reproduction

4-10 eggs are laid during spring or early summer and hatch in August through September.[6]

La serpiente occidental parche de nariz (Salvadora hexalepis) es una especie de culebra no venenosa, que es endémica en el sudoeste de los Estados Unidos y el norte de México.[1]

Rango geográfico

Se encuentra en el suroeste de los Estados Unidos en los estados de Arizona, sur de California, Nevada, sur de Nuevo México y suroeste de Texas. También se encuentra en el norte de México en los estados mexicanos de Baja California, Baja California Sur, Chihuahua, Sinaloa y Sonora.[2]

Subespecies

Se reconocen las siguientes cuatro subespecies:[2]

Descripción

Los adultos de Salvadora hexalepis tienen, en promedio, 20 a 46 pulgadas (51 a 117 cm) de longitud total;[3]​ la longitud total del récord es de 58 pulgadas (150 cm).[4]

Tienen una distintiva escama gruesa curvada hacia atrás sobre la parte superior del hocico y libre en los bordes.[4]

Todas las subespecies son amarillentas con rayas laterales negruzcas en varios arreglos.[5]

Las escamas dorsales son lisas y la placa anal está dividida.[4]

Comportamiento

La serpiente occidental de nariz parcheada habita en los desiertos áridos de su área. Se alimenta de lagartijas, serpientes, huevos de reptiles y pequeños roedores.[6]

Reproducción

Se ponen de 4 a 10 huevos durante la primavera o principios del verano y eclosionan de agosto a septiembre.[3]
