GENERAL INFORMATION ON DISTRIBUTION GENERAL DISTRIBUTION:
Newberry's cinquefoil occurs from south-central Washington, south through eastern Oregon to northeast California and northwest Nevada [2]. NatureServe provides a distributional map of Newberry's cinquefoil.

HABITAT TYPES AND PLANT COMMUNITIES:
Newberry's cinquefoil is most commonly found in sagebrush (Artemisia spp.) and juniper (Juniperus spp.) woodland communities [11,14,15].

Newberry's cinquefoil is a community dominant in the following vegetation types in Oregon:

  • silver sagebrush (Artemisia cana)/Newberry's cinquefoil/mat muhly (Muhlengergia richardsonis)-Baltic rush (Juncus balticus)-sedge (Carex spp.)[14].
  • silver sagebrush/bottlebrush squirreltail (Elymus elymoides spp. elymoides)-Newberry's cinquefoil
  • Newberry's cinquefoil
  • sedge-Baltic rush-Newberry's cinquefoil
  • lupine (Lupinus spp.)-Newberry's cinquefoil-mat muhly-Baltic rush-sedge
  • beethistle (Eryngium articulatum)-Newberry's cinquefoil-smartweed (Polygonum spp.)-navarretia (Navarretia spp.)
  • Baltic rush-mat muhly-Newberry's cinquefoil-tansyleaf evening primrose (Camissonia tanacetifolia ssp. tanacetifolia)-lupine
  • mat muhly-Newberry's cinquefoil-willow dock (Rumex salicifolius)
  • silver sagebrush/Newberry's cinquefoil-bottlebrush squirreltail [11].
  • bottlebrush squirreltail-Newberry's cinquefoil [12]

Stems 2-4 dm. high, erect or spreading in the variety, slightly silkyvillous, leafy, but stem-leaves rather small ; stipules linear ; basal leaves pinnate, with 3-10 pairs of slightly silkyvillous leaflets divided to near the base into 3-5 oblong-spatulate or linear segments ; stem-leaves similar, but with 2-4 pairs of less divided leaflets ; cyme diffuse, with slender pedicels, which are at last drooping, but not abruptly reflexed just below the hypanthium ; hypanthium villous, about 5 mm. in diameter ; bractlets and sepals ovatelanceolate, subequal, 4 mm. lon£ ; petals white, obcordate, exceeding the sepals ; stamens 20 ; pistils numerous ; styles slender, but glandular and somewhat thickened below.
Type locality : Banks of Rhett Lake [California or Oregon]. Distribution: Washington to northern California.

Potentilla newberryi is a species of cinquefoil known by the common name Newberry's cinquefoil. It is native to the Pacific Northwest of the United States from Washington to the northeastern Modoc Plateau in California and Nevada.

Distribution

It grows in moist habitat, particularly drying areas such as receding vernal pools and evaporating puddles. It is a dominant plant in many kinds of local habitat, such as sagebrush and juniper woodlands.[1]

Description

The Potentilla newberryi plant may be annual or perennial. It grows from a taproot and produces a basal rosette of leaves. The hairy leaves are made up of a few overlapping pairs of deeply lobed leaflets.

The inflorescence is a cyme of several flowers, each with usually five white petals a few millimeters long.
