The Orchidoideae, or the orchidoid orchids, make up one of the five currently recognized subfamilies of the orchid family (Orchidaceae).The subfamily comprises about 62 genera with 3200 species that typically inhabit terrestrial habits, are rarely epiphytic and have root-stem tubers or fleshy rhizomes.These orchids have a single (monandrous), fertile anther which is erect and basitonic and sectile (capable of being severed) or granular pollinia.The subfamily includes terrestrial orchids from tropical and temperate climates in Asia, Europe, Africa and the New World (Chen et al. 2013, Kew RBG 2013, Wikipedia 2013).
