The big-lip damselfish is a species of ray-finned fish from the family Pomacentridae, it is the only species in the monotypic genus Cheiloprion. It occurs in the eastern Indian Ocean and south western Pacific Ocean and has been recorded from Sri Lanka east to the Solomon Islands, north to the Philippines, south to Vanuatu[1] as well as northern Australia, from Shark Bay in Western Australia to Palm Island, Queensland.[3] and Palau.[1]

Cheiloprion labiatus (Day, 1877) è un pesce osseo appartenente alla famiglia Pomacentridae, unico membro del genere Cheiloprion[1].
La specie è diffusa nelle regioni tropicali dell'Indo-Pacifico ad eccezione dell'oceano Indiano occidentale e del mar Rosso. L'areale va da Sri Lanka fino alle Filippine, le isole Salomone, Vanuatu e il nord dell'Australia. Ci sono segnalazioni da Palau in Micronesia[2][3][4].
Vive nelle zone più riparate e poco profonde delle barriere coralline come le lagune degli atolli, spesso fra i rami delle madrepore del genere Acropora[2][3][4].
Si può trovare a profondità fra 1 e 3 metri[4].
Il carattere più evidente per il riconoscimento di questa specie sono le labbra, che sono ingrossate vistosamente[2]. Per il resto assomiglia molto ai membri del genere Pomacentrus. Il colore è bruno con i bordi delle scaglie più scuro e le labbra più chiare del resto del corpo[2][3][4].
Raggiunge i 6 cm di lunghezza[4].
È un animale diurno. Vive solitario o in piccoli banchi[4].
Si nutre unicamente di polipi vivi di coralli, soprattutto Acropora[3][4].
È una specie ovipara, le uova aderiscono al fondale e vengono sorvegliate dal maschio[4].
