身體細長，體高只有標準體長的8.6
%(孔鼬鳚屬也會低於標準體長的10
%以下)。頭長約是臀鰭前長的一半，頭部一般較為扁平，且側面及上方皆無明顯的棘刺，主鰓蓋骨扁平且活動性良好。眼窩周圍有6
個感覺孔，前鰓蓋骨後緣亦有3 個感覺孔，齒骨下方也有4
個。眼徑略小於吻長。有兩塊細長的中間基鰓骨齒。背鰭鰭條82-98；
臀鰭鰭條65-77； 腹鰭軟條數2； 胸鰭鰭條16，下方有2
根鰭條游離且長度較上面的胸鰭為長，
一般會延伸至臀鰭周圍；尾鰭鰭條6；
鰓條骨8；第一鰓弓上的鰓耙數13；脊椎骨數58+-65；
尾前脊椎骨數17。
棲地
