體短；頭部略寬且扁；軀幹及尾部略側扁；腹鰭通常存在，各具一鰭條，兩者相連；背鰭鰭條95-102；臀鰭鰭條64-71；脊椎骨數55-59。頭部及鰓蓋覆滿小圓鱗，與側線鱗不明顯區隔；主鰓蓋骨具有一強棘；第一鰓弓上部具有2個突起，下部具有3個細長之鰓耙以及8-10個突起；鰓絲與長鰓耙等長，偽鰓具2鰓絲；頭部具有相當大之感覺孔；保存標本全身淡褐色。
