The fish is named in honor of Danish classical philologist Anders Bjørn Drachmann (1860-1935), the president of the Carlsberg Foundation, which financed the Dana expedition that collected the type specimen.[3]

Diaphus drachmanni is een straalvinnige vissensoort uit de familie van lantaarnvissen (Myctophidae).[1] De wetenschappelijke naam van de soort is voor het eerst geldig gepubliceerd in 1932 door Tåning.
