Body tapering, belly rounded before pelvic fins, with 6 + 10 or 11 = 15 or 16 keeled scutes from just behind pectoral fin base to anus. Maxilla short, not reaching to edge of gill cover. Pectoral fin with 6 long filaments; the branched fin rays much shorter than those of pelvic fin.

Amphidromous. Refers to fishes that regularly migrate between freshwater and the sea (in both directions), but not for the purpose of breeding, as in anadromous and catadromous species. Sub-division of diadromous. 印度洋鱭（学名：Coilia ramcarati）為輻鰭魚綱鲱形目鳀科的其中一種，分布於亞洲恆河三角洲至緬甸仰光的海域，棲息深度可達50公尺，本魚從頭向尾部逐漸變細，腹部圓潤，上頷短，未達到鰓蓋，胸鰭鰭條細長，臀鰭長，並與尾鰭相連，尾鰭短小，臀鰭軟條80條，體長可達25公分，棲息在沿海、河口，可作為食用魚。
