Pseudobunocephalus is a genus of banjo catfishes.[1]
The species of Pseudobunocephalus were originally classified in the genus Bunocephalus, but after further study it was found that these fish were unrelated to the type species Bunocephalus verrucosus or any of the other existing aspredinid genera. Thus, a new genus was described in 2008.[1]
Pseudobunocephalus is the most basal genus in the family, and represents the sister group to all other Aspredinidae.[1] P. lundbergi is also the most basal species and is the sister taxon to the rest of the species in the genus.[1]

Pseudobunocephalus species are widespread in the Amazon, Orinoco, and Paraguay-Paraná River basins.[3]
Species of Pseudobunocephalus are small, all of them reaching less than 80 millimetres (3.1 in) SL.[1] They are often mistaken at first glance with juvenile Bunocephalus species.[3]

Las especies que integran Pseudobunocephalus eran anteriormente clasificadas en el género Bunocephalus, pero un nuevo estudio encontró que los primeros no tenían relación con la especie tipo de ese género, Bunocephalus verrucosus, ni con los otros géneros. Por lo tanto, un nuevo género fue descrito en el año 2008.[1]
Este género se encuentra en ríos de agua tropicales y subtropicales de América del Sur, en las cuencas del Orinoco, del Amazonas, y del Plata, llegando por el sur hasta el Paraguay y el norte de la Argentina.

Черевні плавці доволі великі у порівняні з іншими родами цієї родини. Жировий плавець відсутній. Анальний плавець відносно короткий. Хвостовий плавець сильно розвинений, широкий, подовжений.
Забарвлення коричневе, сіре. Передня частина світліше. Спинний та хвостові плавці набагато темніше.
Зустрічаються, трапляються на піщаних ґрунтах, куди люблять зариватися. Активні вночі. Вдень ховаються біля дна, зазвичай у піску. Живляться дрібними водними безхребетними і маленькою рибою.
Мешкають у басейні річок Амазонка, Оріноко, Парана і Парагвай.
