Diagnosed from its congeners in Balkan Peninsula by having the following characters: last simple dorsal ray spinous, serrated posteriorly; usually 64-71 + 3-4 scales on lateral line; 15-20 scale rows between lateral and dorsal origin; 10-13 scale rows between lateral and pelvic origin; anterior scales of flank partly embedded in skin; head, body and fins with conspicuous black dots, smaller than pupil; caudal with a few small dots and without distinct black margin; lower lip with a median lobe in individuals larger than about 10 cm SL, a swollen pad in smaller ones; eye diameter 2.4-3.2 rimes in snout length; caudal peduncle depth 1.6-1.9 times in its length (Ref. 59043).

Barbus cyclolepis, the round-scaled barbel, is a freshwater fish species in the family Cyprinidae. It is found in Bulgaria, Greece, and Turkey. Its natural habitats are rivers and intermittent rivers. It is not considered a threatened species by the IUCN.

A broader concept of Barbus cyclolepis would include in the same species several other barbel taxa that others consider distinct species, i.e. Barbus sperchiensis (Sprechios barbel), Barbus strumicae (Strumica barbel) and Barbus waleckii (Vistula barbel). B. waleckii has however also been suggested to be a hybridogenic species, perhaps derived from common barbel B. barbus and B. carpathicus.

Il Barbus cyclolepis è un pesce d'acqua dolce della famiglia Cyprinidae.

Distribuzione ed habitat

Questo pesce è endemico della parte orientale della penisola Balcanica, in alcuni fiumi tributari del mar Egeo e del mar Nero, pertinenti agli stati di Grecia, Bulgaria e Turchia. Risulta introdotto dagli anni '90 in due fiumi tributari dell'Ombrone della provincia di Grosseto: il Merse ed il Farma[2]
Popola soprattutto piccoli torrenti con acque limpide e corrente veloce.

Descrizione

I Barbus europei sono tutti straordinariamente simili gli uni agli altri e sono difficilmente riconoscibili anche dagli specialisti che spesso devono ricorrere a studi di tassonomia molecolare per riconoscere le varie specie. B. cyclolepis è simile alle specie italiane come Barbus plebejus ma presenta squame piuttosto grandi (64-71 lungo la linea laterale) di cui le più anteriori sono parzialmente infossate nella pelle. La livrea è caratterizzata da punti scuri piuttosto grandi sul dorso che si diradano sulla coda.
Raggiunge i 25 cm.

Stato di conservazione

Le popolazioni sembrano in buono stato[3].

Barbus cyclolepis is een straalvinnige vissensoort uit de familie van eigenlijke karpers (Cyprinidae).[2] De wetenschappelijke naam van de soort is voor het eerst geldig gepubliceerd in 1837 door Heckel.

De soort staat op de Rode Lijst van de IUCN als niet bedreigd, beoordelingsjaar 2006. De omvang van de populatie is volgens de IUCN stabiel.[1]
