Hypoestes is a flowering plant genus of about 150 species. They are widely distributed throughout the tropical and subtropical lands around the Indian Ocean, and some adjacent regions.
It belongs to the subfamily Acanthoideae of the acanthus family, Acanthaceae. Therein, it is classified in the subtribe Justiciinae of tribe Ruellieae, making it a relative of such American genera as the mosaic plants (Fittonia), water-willows (Justicia) and wrightworts (Carlowrightia).
Hypoestes comes from the Greek 'hypo' meaning under, and 'estia' meaning house. It refers to the way the flowers are hidden by the fused bracts.[1]
Many of these herbaceous to small shrubby plants of the undergrowth have boldly patterned leaves, typically featuring red colors. Some are grown as ornamental plants or pot plants. Most well-known among these are H. phyllostachya of Madagascar and its cultivars, commonly called polka dot plant.

Листья супротивные, яйцевидные, заострённые, до 7—10 см длиной, у основания плавно суженные в черешок, по краям гладкие или зазубренные, покрыты узором из пятен различной формы и величины. Основной фон листьев зелёный или густо-фиолетовый, на нём разбросаны точки и штрихи белого, жёлтого или розового цвета.
Цветки в головках или полузонтиках. Прицветники сросшиеся в виде прокрывала, у основания которого сидит 1—3 цветка.
Растут в тропических районах Африки и острова Мадагаскар.
Разводятся как декоративные комнатные растения. Растения эффектны листьями, а также в фазе цветения, хотя цветки у гипоэстесов скромные. Современное многообразие культурных форм происходит от двух близких видов, растущих на Мадагаскаре: Гипоэстес листоколосниковый (Hypoestes phyllostachya) и Гипоэстес кроваво-красный (Hypoestes sanguinolenta). Растение очень неприхотливое. Ему нужен яркий свет и умеренный полив в течение всего года. При недостаточном освещении окраска листьев бледнеет, а стебли слишком вытягиваются. К почвам гипоэстес нетребователен. Размножается как черенками, так и семенами.
Вредителями являются тля и белокрылка. От излишка сырости или недостатке питания края листьев могут почернеть.

4月下旬から5月中旬に、タネをまいて増やす。タネが細かいので、浅い鉢に蒔き、水は上からかけずに受け皿から給水させるようにする。比較的丈夫な植物だが、強い光線には弱いので、夏は半日陰においておくと良い。
