Stipagrostis amabilis is a plant found in Southern Africa. A typcial occurrence site is in the red sands of ancient river beds in the Kalahari xeric savanna ecoregion.
Also known by the common name Dune reed, this perennial is caespitose, clumped loosely. Rhizomes are elongated, and culms are geniculately ascending or decumbent. Plant height is typically 1.5 to 2.0 metres hight. Culm-internodes may be smooth or scaberulous, and distally glabrous. Leaf-sheaths are generally glabrous on their surface. The infloresence is in the form of an open panicle.
