Es troba a l'Atlàntic oriental: des del sud del Marroc fins a Angola,[9] incloent-hi Cap Verd[10][11] i São Tomé.[12][5][13][14][15][8][16][17][18][19][20][21][22][23][24][25][26]
És inofensiu per als humans.[5]

Il pesce chirurgo[2] o pesce chirurgo di Monrovia (Acanthurus monroviae Steindachner, 1876) è un pesce perciforme tropicale, appartenente alla famiglia Acanthuridae, che vive nelle acque dell'Oceano Atlantico orientale[3].
Vive vicino alle coste africane ed all'arcipelago di Capo Verde. In questi territori è piuttosto comune in grandi banchi che pascolano nei pressi delle coste, fino a 25-30 metri di profondità. È stato localizzato anche nel Mar Mediterraneo, ma non ne è originario[3].
Solitamente solitario, più raramente nuota in piccoli gruppi misti con Acanthurus chirurgus[1].
Si nutre di piccoli invertebrati acquatici e fitoplancton[4].
È un pesce di forma ellittica, compresso lateralmente, con ampia pinna caudale falciforme. La colorazione di base va dal grigio acciaio al brunastro, con fini strie longitudinali più chiare. Spicca, a livello del peduncolo caudale, intorno alla pinnula retrattile caratteristica degli acanturidi, una vistosa macchia gialla. La lunghezza massima registrata è 48 cm, ma di solito non supera i 35.
Viene pescato e commercializzato intero o in filetti a scopo culinario e soggetti giovani si trovano a volte nei negozi di acquariofilia, ma non è particolarmente minacciato e quindi viene classificato come "a rischio minimo" (LC) dalla lista rossa IUCN[1].

Acanthurus monroviae is een straalvinnige vissensoort uit de familie van doktersvissen (Acanthuridae).[1] De wetenschappelijke naam van de soort is voor het eerst geldig gepubliceerd in 1876 door Franz Steindachner.[2] Hij noemde de soort naar de vindplaats, Monrovia (Liberia). De soort komt voor in de oostelijke Atlantische Oceaan en is van beperkt belang voor de commerciële visvangst. Ze wordt gemiddeld 38 centimeter lang. Ze wordt ook in aquariums gehouden.

Foi descrito em 1876, pelo zoologista e ictiologista austríaco Franz Steindachner (Steindachner). A etimologia de "Acanthurus" vem do grego akantha, que significa espinho, e oura, cauda. Monroviae vem fazendo referência à sua localidade tipo, a Monrovia, capital da Libéria.[3][4]
Um pequeno peixe de corpo oval achatado, que mede entre entre 38 cm a 45 cm.[3] Possui um espinho com contorno amarelo próximo da cauda (igual ao cirurgião-aquiles (Acanthurus acuilles), característica principal dos peixes-cirurgião (Acanthuridae). Sua coloração varia do preto ao castanho escuro e claro, sua cauda é clara com pequenos contornos em azul. Os jovens são marrons claro com pintas laranjadas no corpo, seguido pelo grande contorno amarelo do espinho próximo a cauda.
O espinho próximo da cauda, usam como defesa, assim como os outros cirurgiões. Vivem em recifes e costões de águas quentes e rasas. Costumam a beliscar rochas, corais e cascos de tartarugas em busca de alimento, como algas e parasitas.[3]
São nativos do Atlântico oriental, na costa oeste da África, dos Marrocos a Angola, incluindo as ilhas da Macaronésia e do Golfo da Guiné.[1][3][4]
Recentemente, foram avistados exemplares solitários no Mediterrâneo, na Laje de Santos e no Arquipélago de São Pedro e São Paulo[5], Brasil, não se sabe ao certo como foram parar nessas regiões, mas no caso de São Pedro e São Paulo, está localizado no Atlântico central, um pouco próximo de algumas ilhas do Golfo da Guiné e de Fernando de Noronha, ou seja, os alevinos desta espécie podem ter migrado para o arquipélago e logo após, para águas costeiras da região sudeste do Brasil. Em Noronha, não foram avistados exemplares, apenas no sudeste, pode ser por causa da temperatura da água e do clima, que a espécie não conseguiu se fixar nessa região. Não apresentam nenhum impacto negativo ambiental na fauna e flora local.[6][7]
Em países africanos e macaronésios, são consumidos, sendo comum de encontrar em peixarias locais. Raramente são importados para o comércio de aquários, assim como outras espécies do oeste africano[3]

A. monroviae trưởng thành dài khoảng 45 cm. Cơ thể của A. monroviae có màu nâu sáng hoặc xám với những đường vân ở hai bên cơ thể. Các vây có màu xanh lam với đường viền màu xanh sáng. Điểm đặc biệt của loài này là cuống đuôi được bao quanh bởi một đốm màu vàng cam rất sáng, giữa là một ngạnh màu nâu đen[2][3].

A. monroviae được đánh bắt như một loài hải sản có giá trị và cũng được nuôi để làm cảnh[1][2].

本魚分布於東大西洋區,包括北非、西班牙、維德角群島、塞內加爾、幾內亞灣、安哥拉等海域。
水深5至200公尺。
本魚體呈橢圓形而側扁。頭背部輪廓不特別凸出。口小,端位,上下頜各具一列扁平齒,齒固定不可動,齒緣具缺刻。頭部深褐色,體為鐵灰色,各魚鰭為黑色,背鰭、臀鰭及尾鰭具淡藍色條紋。尾柄棘包圍了一鮮橘色的黃斑,背鰭硬棘9枚、背鰭軟條24至26枚、臀鰭硬棘3枚、臀鰭軟條24至26枚。尾柄上有硬棘,易傷人。體長可達45公分。
可食用,但大多做為觀賞魚。
