Die Rautenpythons (Morelia) sind eine Gattung von meist mittelgroßen Schlangen, allerdings sind auch sehr große Arten bekannt.
Der Neuguinea-Teppichpython (Morelia spilota harrisoni) ist eine der kleineren Spezies (durchschnittlich 130–150 cm), während der Rautenpython (Morelia spilota) eine Gesamtlänge über 4 m erreichen kann. Der Kopf ist bei allen Arten der Gattung deutlich vom Hals abgesetzt. Die Schuppen sind klein und glatt, nur bei einer Art der Gattung, nämlich bei Morelia carinata, gekielt. Die Färbung variiert von gelb, gelbbraun, grauschwarz bis hin zu smaragdgrün. Die Vertreter der Gattung Morelia verfügen wie alle Pythons (mit Ausnahme der Angehörigen der Gattung Aspidites) über thermosensorische Labialgruben. Diese befinden sich in einer Schuppenreihe entlang der Ober- und Unterlippe.
Die Angehörigen der Gattung Morelia besiedeln Australien, Indonesien und Papua-Neuguinea. Die Pythons besiedeln eine Vielzahl von Habitaten und Mikrohabitaten, so findet man Morelia boeleni in den Hochlandregenwäldern Papua-Neuguineas und West Papuas, wohingegen Morelia bredli aus den heißen Trockengebieten um die Ortschaft Alice Springs im Zentrum Australiens heimisch ist. Der Diamantpython Morelia spilota spilota ist der am weitesten südlich vorkommende Vertreter der Familie Pythonidae überhaupt. Man findet ihn auf der Höhe von Sydney.
Die Gattung Morelia beinhaltet fünf Arten:[1]
Sechs weitere Arten, die sogenannten „ Amethystpythons“, wurden früher der Gattung Morelia zugerechnet, werden aber seit Anfang 2014 in die Gattung Simalia gestellt.[3][4] Das folgende Kladogramm zeigt die innere Systematik der Pythons und zeigt die Stellung der Rautenpythons als Schwestergruppe der Südpythons (Antaresia):[3]

Alle Arten der Gattung Morelia sind im Washingtoner Artenschutzabkommen Anhang II aufgeführt. Das heißt, dass der Im- und Export von Tieren genehmigt werden muss. Ferner müssen Tiere, die sich in privater Haltung befinden, bei der zuständigen Behörde (Gemeinde und Untere Naturschutzbehörde) angemeldet sein.

樹蟒屬(學名:Morelia)是蛇亞目蟒科下的一個屬,主要包括分布於印尼、新畿內亞及澳洲的無毒蟒蛇。目前共有7個品種已被確認。[3]
普遍而言,樹蟒主要棲息於樹上,牠們幾乎花上一大半的壽命待在樹木之上。一般的樹蟒約有2至3米長,暫時知道牠們的主要食糧是傘蜥蜴。
樹蟒分布於摩鹿加群島一帶的印尼區域、新畿內亞、俾斯麥群島與及澳洲。[1]
在中新世時代的澳洲,曾經有一種現已滅絕的樹蟒學名為「M. riversleighensis」。此蟒蛇後來在踎低噴飯的熱潮下,一度被稱為「Montypythonoides riversleighensis」。[2]

最大種はアメジストニシキヘビで最大全長860cm。
緑一色の種や虹色の光沢を持つ種等主にニシキヘビとして知られる体色をした種は少ない。また島嶼に分布するためか地域により体形や体色の変異が大きい。樹上棲傾向が強いためか体形は細い種が多い。樹上棲で動きが素早かったり飛んでいる獲物を逃がさないためか顎の筋肉が発達しており、後頭部が盛り上がっている。
熱帯雨林等の森林に生息する。多湿な環境を好む傾向がある。樹上棲ないし半樹上棲だが、樹上棲の強いミドリニシキヘビでも夜間に獲物を探すため地上に降りる。
食性は動物食で爬虫類、鳥類、哺乳類等を食べる。 繁殖形態は卵生。
ベーレンニシキヘビは生息地の一部では神として崇められている。
アメジストニシキヘビは日本では特定動物に指定されている。アメジストニシキヘビは細身で飼育下ではまず巨大化することは無いが、大型の鳥類も捕食しまた性質が神経質なために指定されていると思われる。性質は総じて荒い種が多く(カーペットニシキヘビは大人しい個体も多いが、立体的なレイアウトにすると気が荒くなるとされる。)前述のように顎の筋肉が発達しているため、あまり触れ合いを楽しむタイプの動物ではない。
