Amara familiaris is introduced species in North America. This species has Palaearctic distribution and occurs mainly in Eurasia and Siberia. In Canada, it is recorded from New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, Quebec, Ontario, British Columbia, Alberta (Lindroth, 1968, CBIF, 2010).

General Description

It is a small species with adults measuring from 5.6 to 7.2 mm. Legs dark or dark black in colouration with greenish or bluish glossy upper surface. Antennae have segments 1 - 3 with base of at least 4. Eyes flat, prothorax with angular protruding front angles and shallow basal foveae which are surrounded by a group of punctulae. Elytral striations apically deepened. Male copulatory organ (penis) straight and slightly bent and possesses lateral lobes (parameres) (Lindroth, 1968).

Open grounds with weedy vegetation. Greater abundance in habitats with weeds such as Stellaria media and Polygonum aviculare (Lindroth, 1968).

Life Cycle

Adults overwinter in soil and emerge in spring and become sexually active. Their emergence is followed by dispersal and colonization of weedy areas and abandoned fields with profuse weed growth. Larval stage has three instars which feed on weed seeds. Larvae are active from April to mid-June. Third larval instar undergoes pupation in the upper surface of soil. First generation adults further overwinter to emerge in spring (Saska and Honek, 2008).

This species is a specialist seed feeder and larvae feed extensively on the seeds of common chickweed, Stellaria media (Klimes and Saska, 2010). However, adults also feed on unripe seeds of hickweed (Cerastium sp.) and grass seeds (Lundgren, 2009). Female fecundity is dependent on seed feeding and they do not reproduce until they have fed on the seeds of S. media (Saska, 2008).

Amara familiaris est une espèce d'insectes de l'ordre des coléoptères, de la famille des carabidés et du genre Amara.
Description
Le bord antérieur du pronotum est nettement échancré et les angles antérieurs saillants. Le deuxième article des tarses antérieurs du mâle est aussi large que le premier. Il est brun foncé mais peut parfois être verdâdre ou bleuâtre[2].
Répartition et habitat
Répartition
Amara familiaris est présent en France (dont Nord-Pas-de-Calais) et dans presque toute l'aire paléarctique[3].
Habitat
On rencontre cette espèce dans les friches, les lisières des forêts, les prairies ou encore dans les jardins[3].

Amara familiaris er en av billene i delgruppen (underfamilien) Pterostichinae i familiegruppen løpebiller. Systematikken følger Carabidae of the World.[1]
Utbredelse
Amara familiaris finnes i hele Europa, Nord-Amerika og Asia. Finnes i Norge.
Utseende
Amara familiaris er 5,5-7,2 mm lang. Brystskjoldets bakhjørner er tydelig avsatt, men uten å være markert utstikkende. Sidene er ikke innsvinget og bakhjørnene er like brede som dekkvingenes skuldre, slik at billen får et ovalt utseende. Dekkvingene tredje rille-mellomrom (fra midtlinjen / sømmen) mangler helt børstepunkter, en fordypning med ett stivt oppstående hår. Antennene er mørke, men de første leddene (rotleddene) er med lyse. Beina er ensfarget, lyse, gul-røde på farge.
Levevis
Amara familiaris tilhører gruppen av insekter med fullstendig forvandling (holometabole insekter), som gjennomgår en metamorfose i løpet av utviklingen. Larvene er radikalt forskjellige fra de voksne i levevis og i kroppsbygning. Mellom larvestadiet og det voksne stadiet er et puppestadie, en hvileperiode, der billens indre og ytre organer endres. Larvene og de voksne (imago) lever som plantespisere.
